By Wayne Dawson on October 23, 2011
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Recorded: New York City, NY October 20, 1977

Personnel: Charlie Rouse - Tenor Sax
Hugh Lawson - Piano
Bob Cranshaw - Bass
Ben Riley - Drums

Charlie Rouse came to prominence through his long tenure as Thelonious Monk's preferred tenor player during the 1950's & '60's. During that time he also notched up a battery of hard swinging, boppish & bluesy sessions under his own name (check out 'Takin' Care of Business' & 'Yeah!'). As with other elder statesman tenor sax players from the same period who went on to record into the 1970's & '80's (Buddy Tate, Harold Land, Junior Cook) there was never any buttoning off on the sense of urgency and spontaneity their playing had been delivering for decades. For Charlie Rouse, 'Moment's Notice' ranks up there with his best work. The opening track, `The Clucker', is flung out at speed and immediately makes you sit up and relish the tightness of the playing. Hugh Lawson on piano plays with great velocity and precision, constantly raising the bar of excitement. `Joobobie' puts on a kind of Afro-Cuban groove that deserves plenty of volume. The recording is great, exposing nicely Charlie's soft, mellifluous tone as he spirals over the top of some funky rhythm from Ben Riley and Bob Cranshaw. As indicated by the cover, C R had plenty to feel good about after this session, all we have to do is listen and be amazed!
