I had a Momentum dive watch on my Amazon "wish list" for a couple years and never seemed to get around to buying one. Well, I've already got divers watches with both quartz and automatic movements, so I looked at their other offerings and found this one. The "field watch" has a lot going for it.
The case, at 44mm, is big, but not too big for most men. The crown at the four o'clock position (with crown protectors as part of the case design) reduces it's perceived size a little bit. The crown itself is a screw-in crown and the 200 meter water resistance looks genuine.
The dial is easy to read with big numbers, hands and batons. This also helps its lume in the dark - which, by the way, is excellent. The big numbers and wide hands are easier to see and the lume is very good, lasting several hours after the lights go out. The Japanese movement seems a good one and in the month I've had this watch, it was only six seconds fast. That's certainly better than average for a quartz movement.
There are a couple of criticisms, though. Firstly, in making a watch that is lower in price, they omitted some things. There's no unidirectional bezel and I don't miss that - it's billed as a "field watch", remember? It's obvious that they cut a few manufacturing steps out of the process. The case itself has a lot of tooling marks on it and obviously, the vibrate or shot blast steps were omitted. It's not really bad, but it's obvious they left something undone.
The second hand advances precisely...right between the second/minute marks! It's not even close. Grrr! Aggravating! But, I have cheaper watches that hit the marks exactly and more expensive ones that don't. It's not a big factor, just a minor annoyance.
The other strike against it is the NATO-style nylon-fabric strap. I dislike them because they look cheap and they're not as good looking on a watch of this size. Personally, I purchased a silicone band from Clockwork Synergy that looks and feels a lot better to me 22mm Premium 2 Piece Ss Silicone Striped Navy Blue / White Interchangeable Replacement Watch Band Strap.
These criticisms are relatively minor on balance as you get a screw-down crown, accurate movement, excellent lume in dark conditions on a solid, nice looking watch. It's not perfect, but it is a solid four stars.
It is bigger than I expected, I was wearing a Seiko 5 Automatic and this is considerably larger. I intend to wear this watch during saltwater kayaking trips, so I hope it lives up to its promise as a rugged water resistant watch. The numerals are borderline cartoonish in size, but the lack of understatement makes it a breeze to read.
Lume is just OK. It is readable through the night, but the numerals are pretty dim.
The band is not as cheap as other reviews led me to believe. The band is nylon, which is inherently disposable, but band itself is thick and the metal pieces are tough and match the watch case. If you ever order a generic NATO band from Amazon or that big auction site, you'll notice the difference in quality. That said, I took the advice from another reviewer and ordered a 22mm Black Italian Rubber MODENA Rubber watch band w/ Tang Buckle' from Amazon as well.
As others have said, the nylon strap looks like it will get flayed within a few months, if not weeks. Because of this advice, I ordered the 22mm Diamond Pattern MODENA Rubber watch band w/ Tang Buckle to go with it, and ditched the nylon strap the moment I took the watch out from its box. Replacement was very DIY easy (done under 5 minutes) and the rubber watch band fits perfectly - even the finishing grain of the solid stainless steel tang buckle is an exact match for the stainless steel casing of the watch. The black rubber watch band has very tiny and very faintly raised diamond patterns, is soft, does not smell, does not attract dust and unless you've bought this watch yourself, you won't be able to tell that it did not originally come with this watch.
I highly recommend this particular rubber watch band to replace the nylon strap - it's affordable (but does not look cheap) and is a perfect match for this watch.
