I've read many dozens of trading and investment books-- O'Neill, Livermore, Sperendeo, Minervini, Schwager, Loeb, Fisher Philip and Ken, Covel, etc etc etc. This is one of the best. One to reread and read. With more experience you'll get more out of it. Even a few charts to illustrate some notable gain and loss trades of the participants.
This book is a must read book for investor/trader at any level.
Thank you for writing such an informative book. I bought another copy for a fellow trader.
I re-read the book. My initial 3-star rating was simply because I am not an "O'Neil trader". Not because he is not successful, he is [very], but because the style of trading requires constant screen observation which is difficult for those working full-time jobs outside of trading. I have read and am familiar with most all of Mr O'Neil's books and at one time even had a "cassette" tape of Mr. Ryan's thoughts from the very early IBD days in the 1990's. I even took a small Nevada commercial bank to IPO in the mid-2000's and profited greatly from the IBD herd when it made the weekly IBD 100 and the disciples ran it up to the point that we [fortunately] sold the bank right at the top of the cycle. My point in sharing these after-thoughts is that this style of trading is growth stock breakout which requires the ability to close trades very quickly to preserve capital. If you have too many distractions (as Mr. Zanger points out) this method will be challenging, at least it was for me.
I elevated my star rating from 3 to 4 because all of the round table participants advocated being Flat for weeks, months, years when market conditions weren't right. O'Neil said, "all stocks are speculative". So, preserving capital in poor/weak markets is paramount to survival for us Muppets. Finally, the chapters on Psychology and Final Thoughts provided me with the most insight. These are flagged for frequent reading.
There is something to glean for every [type] trader in this book. Who knows, maybe on my third read I will raise it to a 5.
