Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Although some mommies drive motorcycles, and others drive minivans; some mommies go fishing while others go shopping, all mommies want their children to be who they are. That's Todd Parr's story, and he's sticking with it (as reinforced by his It's Okay to Be Different, This Is My Hair, and lots more funky, friendly picture books). Using his trademark style of brightly colored stick figures, with bold outlined smiley faces for heads, Parr portrays a world of diversity and peace in his simple, esteem-boosting titles. Moms are celebrated here (naturally, you'll find dads in The Daddy Book), in all their traditional, eccentric, athletic, hip, nurturing glory. Each spread shows moms doing their thing: dancing moms opposite swimming moms, short-hair moms next to big-hair moms, and work-at-home moms across from work-in-big-buildings moms. The refrain is that all moms love their kids: "All mommies like to hang out with you!" "All mommies like to watch you sleep!" The Mommy Book is reassuring and fun. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly

Just in time for Mother's Day and Father's Day, a pair of books by Todd Parr celebrates different kinds of parents. "Some mommies work at home/ Some mommies work in big buildings," states The Mommy Book, accompanied by Parr's signature combination of simple text and neon-bright contrasting colors with bold black line. Similarly, The Daddy Book highlights the differences between dads. (Apr.)

I have several of Todd Parr's books. My 2 year old and 5 year old both love them. My 2 year old loves the funny pictures and fast pace. My 5 year old just feels great after we read them. They are full of silly lessons that make kids feel important.

Todd Parr books are so colorful and have great messages attached to them. This book does not disappoint. The pictures are simple and vibrant which really caught my daughter's attention. The message attached is great because it shows diversity among mothers. I recommend all of his books.

My two young children are drawn to the cheerful childlike drawings in neon colors outlined in black. The book shows various stick figure mommies doing different things. Their faces, clothing and hair have a rainbow of colors. It celebrates the diversity of mothers in a gentle way. I particularly liked the page of "Some mommies work at home." with the mommy holding a mop and broom. It ends with "All mommies want you to be who you are!" That's certainly true for this mommy and the parents who'll like this book.

My son who is 16 mos old, loves this book. He loves the bright colors and simple drawings and they easily keep his attention. We also have The Daddy Book, The Okay Book and Otto Goes to the Beach and these are the books he always brings to me and my husband for us to read to him.

My son isn't even two years old yet, but he loves to read a variety of books. He loves this book because it talks about mommies (and he loves the Daddy Book for the same reason), and it is a fun read with cute illustrations! The cover is representative of what the inside has to offer. It's simple, yes, but that's the beauty of it. No matter who your mommy is, she loves you and likes to hang out with you.

Please ignore the negative reviews concerning stereotypes. This is a very fair book with accurate descriptions about the different kinds of "mommies." "Some mommies drive minivans, some mommies drive motorcycles. Some mommies fly kites, some mommies fly airplanes." There is nothing wrong with pointing out the differences. They exist, and none is better than another. It's neither politically correct or incorrect--it just IS. The people who have a problem with this book for the "types of mommies portrayed" have their own problems to sort through, in my opinion. This is life.

The true purpose of this book is to let your child know that no matter what kind of mommy he has, he's loved.

I also highly recommend the Daddy Book and the I Love You book by Todd Parr.

Another Todd Parr classic. If you haven't read any of his books yet this is a great one to start with. If you and your child are already familiar with his works than rest assured that The Mommy Book continues Parr's tradition of colorful, playful and engaging stores for tots. Highly recommend!!!

If you're looking for fun children's books that are progressive, creative, and that send positive messages, these are the books to buy! As the sole parent of a six-month-old, I have been looking for books on alternative families that I will be able to read my son when he begins to discern our family from other (two parent) families. I came across Parr's "The Mommy Book" and "The Family Book," which include a diverse array of both traditional and non-traditional families. I also purchased "It's Okay to Be Different" and "The Feelings Book," which provide simple yet fantastic ideas for conversations around healthy expressions of behavior and identity. I'm now a dedicated Todd Parr fan (you should "like" him on Facebook, if you're a user, to keep abreast of his activities and updates. He resides in the Bay Area and occasionally holds readings out there).
