because your going to need it. I have this same Mondaine watch with a different finish that I have paid to send back to Switzerland factory FOUR times in the past 2 years. I am still waiting (2 months)for them to send me another "new" one, so I bought this watch in the mean time. BUT it also had problems with the date window being unreliable, after setting the date, the date would not advance for 26-36 hours so the date is always 1 day or 2 days behind after initially setting it. You will have to reset the date at the end of EVERY month as well because each individual date dial has 10 digits. Also the lens will fog up when exposed to direct sunlight after about 2 weeks. I have another Mondaine watch that doesn't do that, and my wife has this watch in a woman's model that works great.
After returning 4 watches to Mondaine for the same problems, and then getting a 5th bad one, their customer service at the factory said "send it in to us and we will send you another one"?! HUH? Their factory in Switzerland is using cheap foreign made parts so they can just keep sending you new ones til you get tired of the shipping charges. Swiss made but is it Made in Switzerland????
Amazon was 1/3 the price and the quality is everything I expected. The night vision tubes make you look forward to the dark - no need to hold your arm up to a spotlight to see the time in the dark. You can almost read by the light these things give off.
Supplier was top notch as well
UPDATE: This is NOT a waterproof watch! Splashing in the surf earns a watch full of water. 1m submersion was too much; not the 100m advertised.
Reseller was more than accommodating and offered a full refund but couldn't offer a replacement. I like the watch too much so I removed the back, dried it out, and I'm wearing on dry, sunny days (and nights) only.
Still keeps great time...
However, it's not perfect. The tritium tubes are a bit dim - they only last 20 years or so and this may be five year old stock. The most annoying thing about the watch is also its best feature: the relatively huge date. In order to get the date to be so large, two wheels are needed: one for the tens (0,1,2,3) and one for the ordinals (0 - 9). This means that after you get to the 31st of the month, comes the 32nd, 33rd, and so on until the 39th, then 00. It means that every month you have to manually set the date. As you can tell, that's not really a big deal in exchange for such a readable display, but it was a bit of a surprise. Also, the watch is not very waterproof. It's not worth risking swimming or even showering with it. You'll rot the strap and probably end up regretting it. It will withstand sweat and hiking near waterfalls, etc.
Overall, I'm really happy with the watch.
The bright white face with the iconic red second hand is uniquely attractive in person, the time-keeping is spot-on (as is my other Mondaine), the band is very comfortable, and the size is just right. Best of all you can tell the time AND read the date at a glance... in bright sunlight or in pitch black darkness.
For a daily wearer, I couldn't ask for much more; especially at this price.
