Product Description
'All the scenes you will see in this film are true. If they are shocking, it is only because there are many shocking things in this world...' with those words, Directors Gualtiero Jacopetti, Paolo Cavara and Franco Prosperi unleashed the international sensation that stunned critics and moviegoers alike while revolutionizing the documentary genre forever. Filmed in every corner of the world, this landmark epic explores the culture of life and death, the anguish of man and beast, and the taboos of sex and religion, all amidst the barbarism of civilization gone insane. This is the original 'Shockumentary' that started it all. This is MONDO CANE.

It jumps from subject to subject, and many of the scenes would be laughable if they weren't so maddeningly inferior. The only thing I've seen that gave me a similar feeling to this is clips from the show Bumfights. Being a horror movie fan I don't often sit in judgment on things like this, but in this case I'll make an exception. This will make you ashamed to be human.
I've recently been on a quest (thanks to Amazon) to relive some of the influential films of my childhood, among them: "The Red Balloon" Red Balloon (Ballon Rouge, Le) [Import, All-regions] (Dvd - 1956) , "Nanook of the North" Nanook of the North (Criterion Collection Spine #33) , and "Mondo Cane" Mondo Cane .
These were films (with the exception of Mondo Cane) that were shown on old 16mm projectors in the auditorium of my elementary school during rainy days when we couldn't be out on the playground.
I fondly remembered them (or at least various segments) though I hadn't seen them for decades.
"Mondo Cane" is a 1962 Italian production directed by Gualtiero Jacopetti, Paolo Cavara and Franco Prosperi, and produced by Mario Massei.
It is the first in a series of early reality `Shock' and `Exploitation' films composed of vignettes shot from around the world and edited in a fashion to contrast the social differences and similarities of the various cultures.
"Mondo Cane" was released theatrically in the states in the early 1960's.
This was a shocker of a film for its day, and I saw it from the backseat of my parent's car at a drive-in. It wasn't the main feature, as in those days double and sometimes triple feature movies were common and would be presented along with accompanying cartoons and newsreels. I'm sure "Mondo" was a hanger on film attached to one which was more popularly accepted, but I can't remember that other film, whereas I do remember "Mondo Cane."
Perhaps the threat of immanent demise from nuclear war helped solidify some of those memories for me, as it was the turbulent early 60's and in October 1963 we had a stand-off with the Soviet Union over missiles in Cuba, a very, very close call that few of us fully understood at the time.
But I remember a scene in "Mondo" where islanders had returned to the island of Bikini which we'd used as an H-Bomb test site years earlier. The radiation had altered the fauna to the extent that they were knocking fish out of trees, and digging winged birds up from beneath the ground. These were adaptations that allowed some of these animals to survive, but the thought that "we" (mankind) did this and how strange and unnatural was the behavior, stood with me to this day.
I remembered seeing the difference between the average `meat and potatoes' American diet, where we considered an expensive restaurant meal of eating insects a luxury, contrasted with what many in the impoverished third world countries ate day to day (insects as a primary source of protein) and having a steak would be the epitome of a Thanksgiving meal.
I am a dog lover, always have been, and I was shocked that people in Asia could select their "puppy" from an open air market and have it butchered and cooked fresh for them (along with cats, snakes, other reptiles, and a host of living things).
There was a very brutal scene of indigenous people in New Guinea bashing pigs for a 3 day feast that occurs once in 5 years; and scenes of ceremonial beheading of bulls in what was then Burma, to show the warrior prowess of the native guard while prim British officers applauded.
There was a scene of a Buddhist monk's self immolation in demonstration against the repressive brutality of the American sponsored Diem regime in South Vietnam.
I understood so little about that then, now with older eyes, the imminent danger of our involvement then must have been at least as apparent as what we are experiencing currently.
There were some other scenes, considered very risqué at the time that are laughably common now, which served to titillate a preadolescent boy then.
Then there was the hauntingly beautiful Academy Award nominated theme of "More" that stood in stark contrast to this strange film.
How many of us can see something once and have it stick with them for over 40 years?
This film definitely had an impact on my outlook on life at the time that likely helped to shape me and define me now.
When I finally saw the movie again, I anxiously awaited the scenes which I had remembered, while others also came back to mind.
They were all there. But most of the shock and awe was no longer present, dulled by more brutal and shocking scenes of life since.
I personally found that the nostalgia of this film would have been better left to my memory.
I'll likely not view it again, unless I want to show it to my grandchildren at an appropriate time if they are interested in what we considered shocking in the early 1960's.
One thing remains unchanged. "Mondo Cane" means "Dog's World." I interpret that to mean that it's an all too frequently ruthless Dog-eat-Dog world. Though canines seldom actually cannibalize each other, even in the wild, the sentiment is just as apropos for human society in our time today, as it was when this film was first produced, and that is the sad reality that this movie brings to heart for me. That we have changed so little for the better and so much more for the worse in the last 40 plus years.
I gave this film a 3 because of its very special and limited appeal.
For first time viewers today, accustomed to viewing far more brutal and shocking things on a day to day basis, this film will likely offer nothing. For older viewers such as myself, that want to see this film again for nostalgic reasons, it is a mixed bag, depending on how life's experiences have shaped us.
