Editorial Reviews

Hailing from Sacramento, California, Death Grips was formed in late 2010 and consists of vocalist Stefan Burnett and production team Zach Hill and Andy Morin. The band dropped the highly acclaimed mix tape Exmilitary featuring the standout track "Guillotine", Time Out NY 's #1 single of 2011. The release garnered critical praise from tastemakers such as Pitchfork, NME, Spin, The New Yorker, and more, with many call outs on year end best of lists. Death Grips follow up Exmilitary with their Epic Records debut, The Money Store. The album builds on Exmilitary's unique punk rap sound and explores new territory with standout tracks "Get Got", "Blackjack", and "I've Seen Footage".

This album is definitely not for everyone. Its visceral, full of aggressive emotions and in your face throughout. Was it for me? The answer is hell yes. Every song is diffrent from the other and has alot more variety then their mixtape Exmilitary which was still a phenomenal tape in my book. Songs on this range from atmospheric to mosh pit crazy. Replay value is huge on this thing as well. I lost count how many times ive listened to it but i have not grown tired of it. To put it siimply, i love this album and cannot wait for their next release later this year "No Love." If you havent heard any of Death Grips music and want to hear the hip hop genre being pushed to the boundaries, do not pass this masterpiece up.

Death Grips' "The Money Store" is a must buy for anyone who likes music, period. If you're new to Death Grips and haven't listened to their free downloadable mixtape "Exmilitary" , know that this album will be unlike anything you're used to hearing. I listen to a lot of Norwegian Black Metal, Hardcore Punk, EDM and Underground Rap-- despite my background, Death Grips still proves to have creative and catchy work. They aren't constrained to any genre archetypes either,so no pretentious BS here, just raw music.

Ok, ok, picture this. What would happen if Chuck Norris was born black, you stole him, injected him with a superhuman mutant virus, gave him a jazz drummer, removed his teeth and asked him to dance on a broken keyboard?
Death Grips.
There aren't too many words that could describe this happy amalgamation of elements that has decided to combine their forces and create this chaos. I read someone on the vast net call it 'Hobocore', and so that's what it is. But, there is a slight intelligence behind it all that a hobo cannot give you. Their former album began with a short and crazy Manson clip. Just like Manson, Death Grips teeter between otherworldly, babbling psychosis, yet carrying a charming intelligence that is impossible to contain. The Money Store CAN be described by two words: raw energy.
I highly recommend, if you are into metal, rap, or anything stretching boundaries, that you BUY the album. Each song offers something different. While you're there, try and obtain a copy of Ex-Military which was a collection of songs offered by Death Grips as a free download on their website. Between the two, The Money Store is perhaps a slightly more buoyant, but no less-focussed album.
This is music that is truly accessible only to people who want to access inaccessible music: a lot of people will avoid it because of its cover. The Money Store, like any output this group has, or will put out, is devoid of commercialism and is made for people who like music undefined by genre or expectations.
As I write, they already have plans to release their next album this year.
Get up to date with Death Grips, and enjoy them here and now.

Look, this album isn't for everyone. I'm gonna start with that hard truth. It's hardcore by anyone's standards, whether your favorite musicians are The Ink Spots or Kanye West. I'm a big fan of 80's Hardcore Punk Rock, and this is hardcore as hell by my standards; and I love every second of it.

This is what music exists for. This is pure substance over style. This album is far from sexy. This album is far from polished. This album defines the word raw and grit in musical terms more than most any other music that exists. Heavy gansta rap talking about literally murdering other human beings is softer than this album, even though this album doesn't mention a single drive by. This album makes death metal sound like whiny b***es complaining about nothing. While this album doesn't carry the same substance, I would say this album almost has the same impact as Fugazi or Kendrick Lamar (two artists I respect more than almost any other).

Again, this album isn't for everyone. It's loud. It's abrasive. If you don't enjoy hip-hop you probably won't enjoy this album. If you do enjoy hip-hop, it's almost equally unlikely that you will enjoy this album. If you enjoy music that pushes music of all genres, period, this album is exclusively for you. In fact, Death Grips entire work exists for you, and if you haven't heard them yet, this is the album you should be putting your money on above any and all others from any artist in existence.

The first song song here, 'Get Got', is probably the most poppy song in all of Death Grips library, so if you don't enjoy it you should just give up on the artist all together (...

I love Death Grips and so does my boyfriend. I ordered this cd for him for his birthday and it shipped really quick even with a short delay. The only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is because the cd I ordered came with 2 different cracks in the case. I don't know if it was shipped like that or if that just happened...but it's definitely a disappointment..

The music is 5 stars for sure, but when you're shipped a HAIM album in a Death Grips sleeve...not cool.
