For almost 40 years, Mongoose has been in the dirt, on the trails, and off the ramps. Founded in 1974 in a Southern California garage, Mongoose has always been an aggressive brand with products that push the limits of what a rider can do. The second one I ordered after the first was returned was much better. The bearing lube was a little stiff but the bearings actually functioned, so it was useful.
My daughter loves it though. It's easy to ride and is a great size mix between the little kid 14" toy bikes and the 20" "big-kid" bikes that are just a little too large for the smaller kids.
Had the first bike worked as well as the second I would have given it 4-stars as well. So I'll consider the first bike an anomaly and rate the second-received bike as if it were the first. For the price though, as long as it functions, it's hard to beat. The kid loves it and can ride it great and at the end of the day that's what really matters....so 4-stars it is.
5/31/16 update - I dropped the rating for this from a 5 star to 4. We have had significant problems with the handle brakes - so much so, that we had to actually REMOVE them altogether just so my daughter can use her bike. Thankfully, she can still use the pedal brakes...DO NOT BUY IF YOU WANT THE HANDLE BRAKES - they're worthless.
Opened it up to find all parts accounted for and a set of directions that are vaguely specific (i.e., huge manual, but the manual is written for a range of bikes, so you have to be familiar enough about bike construction to infer how to assemble. First problem I came across was that the neck of the handle bar was inverted (why I have no idea - can't be for shipping b/c there was plenty of room - AND there was no info in the manual to warn you of this, so it was probably a manufacturing mistake or packaging error). But it took a good 20 mins to figure out that the neck of the handlebars was inverted. After loosening bolts and flipping that, it attached fine. Then, here's where it really failed. The fork which connects to the front wheel was welded improperly so that one side was a bit too inward. It took another 40 minutes before I realized that the front tire simply would never attach b/c the fork was too narrow. I didn't realize this until out of frustration I walked out of the room, looked back at the bike (it was inverted with fork facing upward), and noticed that one side pointed a bit more inward than the other. I realized at that point this wheel could never fit b/c it was welded improperly (well I'm assuming this was Mongoose's fault - it could have been the not-so-stellar packaging and deliver too I suppose).
So, superficially it's a cute bike, but the only thing good about this whole purchase was that Amazon has been relatively efficient with the return. Although even that was somewhat poorly handled. I used the online system to file the refund and it explicitly says 2-5 business days for pick up by UPS. Thankfully, I was boxing it up today (the first business day), and as I was getting ready to seal it up, UPS showed up for it. The driver offered to come back tomorrow but I made him wait since Amazon told me 2 business days lol.
Lesson learned: I will NEVER buy a bike via Amazon (or the internet) again. I will pump some money into the local economy and go to an actual bike shop where I can point and walk out with it.
