Up until recently, I've been happy to settle for a pretty low end pair of old Pioneer S-H153B-K bookshelf speakers with a spare 20 year old Pioneer VSX-27TX receiver in my home office. Recently, I remodeled the office and decided I needed some decent bookshelf speakers, especially after I upgraded the receiver to a much more powerful Pioneer SC-07 receiver with Bi-wire/Bi-amp capabilities.
I went to a couple audio shops and demo'd a few Bookshelf speakers in the sub $1,000 to $2,000 price range, notably Focal Electra 1008s, Warfdale Reva-1s and SVS Ultras. Although most of what I heard had their pluses and minuses, it really seemed that I wasn't getting good value for the money with anything I was hearing. So after doing more research online, I did something I rarely do which is blind buy the Monitor Silvers when I saw a (non-Amazon, btw) online dealer had them for significantly below standard retail.
So these come as a pair in one box. You get two speakers, two grills, a pair of gold terminal jumpers per speaker, a little baggy with a pair of "plugs" for the rear vent if you want that option to affect bass and the user manual. No spikes and there's no holes on the undersides of the speakers for spikes or mounting on a stand. One caveat regarding how they're packaged, they're well protected on the tops and bottoms with styrofoam but the center area of the sides of the speakers are vulnerable to poor handling by shippers and in fact, something had punch a fist-sized hole in the side of the box causing an almost un-noticed small ding in the finish.
Cosmetically, I can only comment on the finish for the black option. The speakers weigh about 20lbs each, they're solidly built. It's semi-flat over wood grain and the grill attaches via unseen magnets - no pegs which is a nice touch. They do have a rather ordinary, boxy look but it's the sound that counts big time for these speakers. There's two sets of terminals and a pair of gold plated jumpers per speaker so the user can either wire them traditionally or bi-wire or bi-amp them.
Sound: Impressive for their size right out of the box. I broke them in leaving them playing music during the daytime at a comfortable listening level for almost a week and they opened up a bit more and the already impressive bass seemed to deepen after breaking in. The big deal for these speakers is very nice bass due to the 8" woofer at the 40Hz range that you won't get with many similar speakers costing 2, 3 times as much. The sacrifice is the mid/high-range seems a bit laid back at lower volume but improves when really pushing these speakers at or near reference levels. It goes without saying, Bi-amping these speakers really opens up the sound.
Overall, I think these speakers provide outstanding sound for their size and price point. If you can shop around and find these below $900, snap 'em up.
