Product Description
Oscar® nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) achieves an astonishing, tour-de-force feature directing debut with an action thriller about one man's quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless. Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city's sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him. Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and his screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World).

He is kind to a dog. Which is a little nerve-wracking because with all the action and violence the viewer has to worry about some horrid end for the dog. But the relationship with the dog, while quite nice, goes nowhere. Sadly because it is one of the few relationships in the movie.
I love Dev Patel. So many of his movies I have watched repeatedly. He is often great on the screen. His every-man-ness. His decency. Intelligence. He is a stand out, like in Newsroom. (Of course that was Aaron Sorkin, but…)
Monkey Man had potential. Myth, revenge, India. And granted it may appeal to some, those hungry for scene after scene of violent action. But yawn 🥱, action not supported by strong interesting plot development leaves me bored. And yes there are some quite interesting characters, but there is barely any time to get to know them. Except the dog. I’d give her a best supporting. Well a best cameo at least.
Admittedly obviously I am not a fan of action, not fan of action movies, I find them generally tedious. I am a fan of certain actors. I paid $20 to see Monkey Man. (And Green Knight.) Because I am a Patel fan.
But strike two, Mr. Patel. Green Knight? Thumbs down. 👎🏻 Monkey Man? Thumbs down. Two thumbs down. 👎🏻 👎🏻.
Wedding Guest? 5 stars.
Hotel Mumbai? 5 stars
Lion? 5 stars
Best Exotic 1? 5 stars
Infinity? 4 stars
Slumdog? 4 stars
Even Newsroom (your performance)? 5 stars
Perhaps those roles did not satisfy you Mr. Patel. I would have loved a sequel to Wedding Guest. Now there was an interesting character. There was violence embedded in the plot. Explosive interesting unexpected violence. And a curious aftermath of the violence.
You, Mr. Patel can be magnetic on screen, appealing, fascinating, mysterious, powerful, charming, intelligent, perplexed, decent. Sometimes heartbreaking.
Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?
Look Mr. Patel, I don’t know what you are looking for. Don’t know what you want the movies you star in to do. Or what you want the movies you make, to be. But here is my advice if you want to make another movie, or star in one, or both, that viewers will love and watch over and over, get Aaron Sorkin to write your next movie.
The character you play in Wedding Guest is great. Fascinating. But Winterbottom no, he is soo uneven. He goes from The Aroused Heart (exquisite) and Wedding Guest (endlessly fascinating) to his barely watchable travelogues and farces.
Anyway. Strike two, Mr. Patel. Glad the critics are impressed. Happy for you that the critics love the movie. I wish I could get my $20 and my two hours back .
You won’t fool me again.
Alas for us both.

Kid tries to seek revenge on the people responsible for his mothers death. Filled with rage and hate, he comes close to getting what he wants but falls short, leaving him broken and lost. With help from kind strangers who are simply trying to survive in a world stacked against them, Kid sees the love and joy around him. He sees the people and how they suffer under the hand of the same criminals he had sought to destroy.
After aid from the strangers, now friends, and once Kid has made a decent recovery, he takes a step aside from his personal vendettas and helps the people who helped him. He has come to realize that he does not need to seek revenge for his mother, but justice for those who are still suffering. By this new purpose, he faces the corruption head on, he is able to defeat all those in his path because he now fights with purpose and a reason, knowing those he has encountered along the way will benefit from his sacrifice.
At the end, he reconciles his choices, knowing he killed all his enemies, not out of hate or selfish need, but because it was what needed to be done. It was out of love and selflessness and for the people who deserve to be free from tyranny.
You heard what all the film buffs have been begging for since 1994 and finally created an exciting follow up to Monkey Trouble (96 minutes) starring then child star turned Hollywood starlight Thora Birch(from Hocus Pocus and American Beauty) and Harvey Keitel (From Taxi Driver and Sister Act)
The story of Dodger continues as now he’s all grown up and boxing in the big city and Eva is now a prostitute.
After Dodgers mom is killed by Eva’s dad, Dodger executes a long planned revenge caper that has so many moving parts it reminded me of Oceans Eleven(116 minutes).
In a lot of ways, this movie is a lot like Rocky and it has an underdog; in this case a Monkey, who in the end, defeats the villain and gets the girl.
My one complaint is Christopher McDonald is didn’t return as Tom which was one of his best performances, this movie could gave used his comic chops since it was a pretty dark and serious movie.
However with so much exciting action and thrills and the addition of Sharlto Coldplay as Dodgers best friend, there’s a real lesson on the true value of friendship in tough times.
So I’m going to give this movie 5 bags of popcorn, 5 bags of soda, and maybe a little Monkey Paw for good luck that we don’t have to wait another 20 years for a third entry in the Monkey franchise.
