Create photosensitive objects on your 3D printer using this 1.75mm Color Changing PLA Filament from Monoprice! PLA is a good choice for a printing material if you are looking for high accuracy and high resolution. It extrudes at lower temperatures, does not require a heated base, and has a very low shrinkage rate (0.3%). PLA is harder than ABS, but is therefore also a bit more brittle. Additionally, PLA is a plant-based plastic, which means that it is biodegradable and gives off a slightly sweet odor, like roasting corn. The negatives of using PLA is that it is vulnerable to degradation from moisture, sunlight, and heat. Additionally, it is more prone to overheating during processing, which can cause dripping and drooping if it gets too hot. This filament is photosensitive. Under normal conditions it is a neutral/whitish color, but when exposed to sunlight it quickly changes to a brilliant pink. It comes on a 0.5kg spool and prints at temperatures between 190 ~ 220°C.

Top customer reviews
Even before opening the packaging, we took the filament outside in sunlight. Immediately, the filament changed from near white to, according to my daughter, a “beautiful pink.” Once inside, the filament began to change back to its original color. My daughter immediately had plans to design and print a custom creature to enter into a Halloween contest at her school. So, the color changing features was an instant hit at my house!
I found the print qualities to be excellent and on par with Monoprice’s thermochromatic blue (Product #12052) that I also reviewed. Both products yielded beautiful prints with great details that did not require any significant post-printing touch ups when printed on my homemade Prusa i3 printer with .4 mm E3Dv6 nozzle. I printed at 205 (210 for first layer) and print bed at 55c with a thin layer of hairspray.
I can’t say enough good things about this filament. It has all the qualities you’d expect from PLA except that pre-printing, it feels more textured. I really believe that the texture contributed to the excellent layer adhesion and print quality.
The UV color changing adds another dimension to me and my daughter’s creative processes. It really is that cool!
Spool measurements I recorded:
Spool width: 41.5mm
Hub diameter: 53 mm
Hub width: 35.25
Filament dimensions very consistent throughout the spool at 1.73 to 1.75mm.
