The Monoprice Blackbird HDMI audio extractor worked fine for my purposes. I was cobbling together two AVR's to form a 7.1.4 Atmos sound system using an Onkyo TR-NX656 & and older Sherwood all analog input AVR's linked via ASIO4ALL software and using the Dolby Reference Player for playback of Atmos encoded files on the pc.
This device was fed with a Display Port to HDMI cable from the ASUS Prime Z590-A motherboard on my pc. The Onkyo was fed signal via the HDMI output from the motherboard on my pc. The Onkyo was switched to multichannel output.
The 3.5mm outputs from the extractor were fed to cables that were fashioned with stereo 3.5mm jacks on one end and dual RCA jacks on the other, the RCA jacks fed into the Sherwood's multichannel analog inputs.
ASIO4ALL was installed in Windows 11 Pro and Windows was configured for 7.1 sound. The Dolby Reference Player was installed and configured for 7.1.4 playback with the input from ASIO4ALL. After some trial and error with Windows, unrelated to the Monoprice unit, success was achieved.
The Monoprice unit has HDMI input, and HDMI pass-through output, as well as three, 3.5mm stereo jacks that carry the extracted analog sound. The HDMI pass-through jack was tested by connecting a cable to a monitor. The unit functioned fine at all times with no problems. It requires no software for the extraction process.
This device did not work. I ordered this box to decode the audio output from my HDMI connected Blu-Ray player to analog audio, for input to my old analog amplifier (it has 5.1 analog inputs). I tried every configuration listed and could never get any audio output from the box at all. It took me over a month of messing with it to figure out that it just wasn't working. When I tried to return it, the seller (not Amazon) would not authorize the return since it was past their 30 day window. So, I guess it was technically on me that I spent so long trying to make it work, but now the only recourse I have is to fight with the manufacturer to try and get a replacement that may not work either. Don't waste your time and money. Just go buy a new amp with a built in decoder.
I'm using an analog 7.1 headset (with discrete drivers for each channel) with a PC, and my new motherboard lacks the four analog 7.1 1/8" audio ports I need (nor does it have the SPDIF digital optical out to output to the amp for my desktop speakers). Initially I used a SoundBlaster external USB dac, but it got flakey and static sounding under Linux. So I switched to this extractor instead. It works great off an unused HDMI port on my GPU, outputting both digital optical and 7.1 analog, with ONE major issue - the 1/8" headphone jack for the center/subwoofer outputs has the channels flipped from the standard (it's supposed to be center channel on left stereo plug lead, subwoofer channel on right stereo lead). For some reason this device outputs the center channel on the stereo right lead, and the subwoofer channel on the stereo left. WTF, right? A workaround is a pair of stereo 1/8" to RCA cables, connecting the rca right from one to the rca left from the other, combining back to a single female 1/8" jack, and that works fine, but this should be unnecessary. It's basically is a self-inflicted wound by Monoprice because they deviated from the standard. Pretty bad QA testing to let this mistake slip through the cracks!
I have a fairly basic setup. A Windows 10 PC is connected via its HDMI cable to a Samsung TV. I have four powered surround speakers. Windows is capable of generating stereo, 5.1 and7.1 audio if the device the HDMI output is connected to is capable of receiving multichannel sound.
My old system used an Onkyo A/V receiver with powered surround sound speaker outputs. I then upgraded my system adding powered speakers and removing the Onkyo amplifier. I still wanted to use the PC's HDMI multichannel output and use an audio extractor device to feed my powered speakers.
The problem I ran into with most HDMI audio extractors is that they pass through the HDMI signal from the PC to the Samsung TV. The result is that Windows "sees" only the two channel Samsung TV and won't allow more than two stereo channels to be generated. After some research, I learned the problem is a protocol called Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) which allows devices to communicate to each other about their video and audio capabilities. In my case, the Samsung TV's EDID was telling the Windows PC, "I can only handle two stereo channels", so that's all Windows sent it.
The Monoprice Blackbird Extractor solved this problem because it can produce its own 7.1 audio EDID. I was then able to generate surround channels with the Windows PC and use the optical and analog outputs on the Blackbird to feed my surround powered speakers while feeding the HDMI video to the two channel TV. The Blackbird will even do this without a device connected to the HDMI output. Also, unlike other extractors, both the optical and analog outputs can be used at the same time.
I want to add that the Monoprice customer support was excellent. I was actual able to speak to a knowledgeable support person on the phone.
It extracts audio from the Blu-ray but only 5.1; the two extra side channels are suspiciously missing. But, at least the other channels work giving me what I think is 5.1 surround. It also works with regular DVDs that are made for 5.1 surround. It is finicky; I have to plug and unplug things and play with the switch, but it eventually works for the DVD / Blu-ray surround sound. It also extracts audio from chromecast but only stereo. I don't know why, it is an older chromecast. It does not extract audio from the laptop hdmi output at all. (Maybe the hdmi security standard was updated and this device is older?) This device is kinda expensive for what it does. It might have been better to buy and S/PDIF to analog extractor because the Blu-ray player has a S/PDIF out, and it probably would be 7.1 I was lucky to find a refurbished device that wasn't quite as expensive.
I brought this because I run a community cinema group and needed better sound to go with the portable cinema screen and battery powered speakers. The monoprice audio extracter hasn't missed a beat. I get great sounding multichannel audio streaming movies from my laptop. Even at 4K it works fine. My only gripe is that it ships with a U.S still plug pack and although it supports 230V AC you need a UK socket adapter.
Got faulty one. Out of 7.1 two channels (FLC/RLC) are giving distorted sound. it defies monoprice's claim of quality product. Think twice before you buy or look for other suitable alternatives.
Funcionó por breve tiempo, ahora parece que hace falso contacto , la opción de lcpm 7.1 parece que se invertio y no se escucha , una pena funcionaba muy bien ahora pediré que se aplique la garantía extendida
