Works great to replace a vintage IDE hard drive on an old PC!

I bought this to replace the old slow hard drive on a vintage 486 PC. It was easy to install, and I had no problems copying everything over from the existing hard drive and making it bootable using MS-DOS and FDISK. For my project, I used a 1GB Compact Flash card, and found that the machine boots much quicker and is a lot more responsive.

The only negative that I can see with this product is that there is no header pin for drive activity. This is an easy fix if you are handy with a soldering iron, though. There is an activity LED on the board itself which can be extended and mounted elsewhere. Alternatively, the LED can be removed and header pins installed in its place, which is the route I chose to follow. This allowed me to easily hook up to the original LED built into the case of the PC.

I would recommend this adapter for anyone looking for an inexpensive way to replace spinning platter drives in old / retro machines. As a side benefit, it's easy to remove the CF card without opening the PC, which allows for quick and easy file transfers between older and newer machines.

Excellent Compromise for Older Hardware

I've used a few of these things for replacing the old, spinning ATA/IDE HDDs and where putting in a SATA controller (for running a modern SSD) wasn't feasible: old Apple PowerMacs and Commodore Amigas mostly, but also the occasional Windows 98 restoration. It generally works as advertised, though sometimes some tweaks need to be made. One of the coolest things is the ability to swap out your hard drive without having to open up the machine: I can shut down my Mac, remove the CF card, and insert one with a different OS version or with one running Linux or something without having to open the machine up and unscrew hard drive brackets. Also, depending on how you run your setup, you can remove a couple of screws to take off the PCI bracket and just let it flop around inside the machine, as you would a regular hard drive, which is convenient for when you don't have any extra PCI slots available.

I am unsure of the long-term viability of using a CF card as your primary hard drive: obviously, CF cards weren't designed with the same usage and lifespan expectations of an HDD or a modern SSD. I've been using a 64GB CF card as my primary, daily-driven AmigaOS drive (yes, I daily-drive a [very expanded] Amiga 500 and no, not ironically) for over a year without any issues, but I backup regularly and have a few extras on hand on the off chance that this one bites the dust.

One thing I would recommend against would be using an SD-to-CF adapter with these. While the relative cheapness of high-capacity SD over CF cards might make it appealing, these adapters are often a bit wonky and add more headaches than they're worth. Stick with actual CF cards and things tend to go much more smoothly.

I purchased this adapter to use as part of a project, replacing the dead hard drive in an old Tandy computer with a CompactFlash card. Booting from the CF card works just fine with this adapter. I have not tried it in a newer computer, but I can't see any reason that it wouldn't work, as long as you have an IDE controller. I had to provide power to the adapter via the floppy power connector, but that wasn't an issue for my build (make sure your power supply provides one of these connectors, or use an adapter cable).

These are great for old machines, where replacing a IDE hard drive is impracticable.
Award bios rom's motherboards mostly have no trouble with these adapters, Phoenix on the other hand often requires you to bypass the onboard IDE and use a PCI or ISA, IDE controller, or the board hangs or exhibits other odd quirks.
