Product Description
Due to its design, USB cable has a normal maximum length of about 5 meters (16.4 feet), but you can get longer distances by using an active USB extension cable from Monoprice!
This is a bus-powered extension cable that can be used to increase the length of a device without any signal loss or potential performance problems. It contains active electronics, which boost the USB signal for maximum reliability and performance over extended distances. The cable operates as self-powered extender, for use with USB cameras‚ printers‚ webcams‚ keyboard/mouse, etc.
It is a true plug-and-play device. No additional drivers are required. It supports Win98/2000/XP/Vista/7, Mac OS V9.0 or higher, and Linux. It can also be used with many types of USB devices, including the Xbox Kinect* and the Eye of the PS3 Move!
Important notes for Kinect users:
1. You can use this cable to connect the USB version of the Kinect only. It is not compatible with the proprietary Kinect connector. If you have a Kinect connector, please use PID 8487.
2. The Kinect requires more power than traditional USB ports are capable of providing. In order to prevent damage to equipment, Microsoft has designed the Kinect with a proprietary connector. If your Kinect did not come with a USB/Power adapter, you must purchase one from Microsoft before you can use this extension cable.

Tech detail for those who need it:
Monoprice manufactured the 32 ft cable with 24 gauge power wires, the same as used in ethernet cables. They foresaw the voltage drop problem and used thicker 22 gauge power wires for the longer 49 ft cable. I did the math the resistance of both cables. The 32 ft extension cable adds 1.702 ohms of resistance, and the 49 ft cable adds 1.660 ohms. Those resistances will also be the voltage drop for a device drawing 1.0 amp.
A slight complication is the extra draw of the active buffer chips on the cable when streaming data. The 32 ft cable has a chip at each end. I measured 53 ma draw at a moderate data rate. The 49 ft has an extra buffer module mid-cable and draws about 85 ma.
For radio buffs, the RTL-SDR draws about 280-290 ma when sampling at 3.2 MSPS. With a solid 5.00 volt hub, the dongle is getting 4.49V using the 32 ft cable, and 4.40V on 49 ft when listening. Very similar current handling, and fine for the dongles. The longer cable wins for higher power devices.
I tested USB 2.0 data throughput on both cables with a fast flash drive, and got full speed (34+ MB/s).
All of the tests were done using a fresh treatment of Deoxit-D contact treament on all connectors, and wiggling to get the best contact pressure position. The numbers are definitely best case, and YMMV. Also expect more voltage drop if the cable is baking in the sun (check the AWG charts).
Because of the active sections, the best method for measuring resistance was to use a shorting plug at the female end. With a constant 1.00 amp current from a lab supply, the 5 digit voltage at the supply gives the total resistance of the test load. The 0.044 ohm resistance of the USB supply cable, connectors, and shorting plug are subtracted from the resistance obtained with the extension cable added.
The connectors could be higher quality. The pins are not gold plated, and it takes some fiddling to get a good connection, as if they lack spring in the contact pressure. The 32 ft cable could be made with the heavier 22 gauge wire for better current handling.
Engineers only: For long runs with cameras I've also used a pair of USB 2.0 to RJ45 active adapters that allow using ethernet cable. They use three pairs for power and 1 for data. With typical Cat5/6 24 gauge cables, the extender resistance is 0.25 ohms plus 0.031 ohms per foot of cable. Max length depends on the specs. Ethernet cables are available in 22 gauge. Design hint to Monoprice and others, three pairs of 24 gauge should be half the resistance of one pair of 22 awg. Ethernet cabling is cheaper in bulk. Using 22 AWG ethernet wire might be three times better.
The one major disappointment is that the 32 ft cable was clearly a customer return that wasn't even repackaged. The scuffed cable had blue masking tape markers on it, and the bag was slit open. It may have been returned because the female end easily drops power and data if not squarely seated and undisturbed, even though visible masking tape gunk and dirt are at the male end. I'll be requesting a refund on the defective one. I hope nobody else gets it.
Installed it in our Kingdom Hall (JW) where we have 8 meetings a week (2 hours per). Going on two months with constant video usage (web cam) and no problems whatsoever.
Very happy with purchase.
I was looking for a Long USB Extension that I cold Hook to my Computer (and Attach my MS 720 LIFECAM) so it could reach to Point out my back Window, so I could see when a persistent Drug Addict who frequently jumps the back Wall to steal Mangoes and Bananas fruits from my backyard Trees.
I must admit I read reviews on other Similar Items, and Admit I may be taking a gamble on buying this (as it may or may not work).
When I plugged it in Initially I kept hearing the Windows "Clunking sound" [When u connect or disconnect a USB Device], and I initially saw "No Camera Detected"
............But after about 10 sec the Picture Finally Came on, and I was able to monitor and even record from my MS LIFECAM 720p Perfectly. (no frame Rate Drop Just Perfect, as if I had it on a regular 4 ft USB)
Even thought this is a "NO Name" China Brand, I paid $11.05 (About a dollar or 2 More than other cheaper similar USB extensions) ....I hoped that paying a little more my result in a Better Quality Item.
My choice was also Based on another Reviewer [Jymbo53] where he said he used it on his LifeCam VX-5000 HD webcam and there was No frame rate Drop at all. So I said if it could work on his Logitech Cam it should work on my MS Lifecam. (Since both are High end Webcams).
And my Decision and Choice DID paid off..... IT WORKS !!!! and that all that Matters.
One thing Should be Noted that when Buying theses extra long USB Extensions Look for One that Has "Repeater Cable" Marked on it (I believe this has something to do with Sustaining the USB Signal ad the Voltage) within the cable.
The Instructions also state that you can Hook up to 5 other [10 meter cables] for a Maximum of 50 metres.
But if you hook other cables unto this (Increasing beyond 50 meters) the Devices Voltage may be reduced.
If the connected Device wattage is 2 Watts or above and you are Using 50 meters (or more) you should use an External Powered USB Hub to Sustain the Proper Voltage and signal for the Attached device to work Properly.
Note: I have only used this in my MS LIFECAM 720P, I will try using it on Other Devices such as Printers etc
and will Update this review accordingly.
BUT For Now .......I am Very Please with My Purchase, ....And I WOULD RECOMMEND this Product. !!!

The cabling is well shielded to prevent any unwanted signals getting in to the cable so your signal is pure with no interference.
Normally a USB cable can not be longer than 5 meters, but because this one is an "Active USB cable" it means there is an extra +5v line throughout the cable. Meaning the signal makes it from one end to the over without any loss of power even over great distances - HIGHLY IMPRESSED !!
I was concerned that the length of the cable may degrade the USB2 speeds from the HDD - Having run BlackMagic Disk Speed test I can confirm they are as they were before I added the extension. It is well shielded, durable, and ideal for the purpose. Given the price I was impressed by the quality.
