Tate and her friend her friend Eric are on their way to visit Tate's aunt. Except they end up kidnapped and Eric dead instead. As an evil Malifec, Tate's aunt isn't the nicest person, or even the nicest monster. She she's kidnapped Tate meets the warlock Evander.
Once they get out, Evander tries to help Tate figure out what she is and how to deal with that, finding her aunt, and ridding the world of monsters (even though she is one).
What I didn't like was that Tate initially doesn't want anything to do with Evander, yet can't seem to keep her hands off him once she does sleep with him. I mean, he's not a jerk, but he does ask "so you only like weak and submissive guys so you can get a self esteem boost?" Considering that's the kind of girl most guys want, isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black? If I were Tate I would have said such. A strong woman who wants a submissive guy (or not even that, just a guy that's not the dominant type) isn't in need of a self esteem boost. And I'm certainly not judging, but why is she so hot for him and vice verse? I thought their relationship could have used a bit more defining...
What I did like is the variety of creatures, monsters, etc that learn to work together, and that no matter what Evander sticks by Tate. Even when he could go with another woman he doesn't. He's Tate's and isn't "that guy". I liked the world building and drama that was created with the new supernatural beings, and I especially liked that some familiar characters from the Daughters of Darkness series made an appearance. Except, no Lucifer ;)
The writing really showed how no one is really what they seem and most of us hide the monster we really are. It's the select few of us who are honest that the world can't handle.
Interesting beginning to a new series!
One of my favorite book boyfriends was in this book and was it bad I was rooting for the other guy because I wanted Evander to stay single? Lol That shows how well his character has been written. I want him all to myself. Hooray for Book Boyfriends :) Without spoiling too much there is a fun twist that I he might have competition on the book boyfriend list.
There are also some major hints to what is coming for the next book and I loved seeing old characters make an appearance in this book.
Another knock out book. Check out all of N. L. Hoffman's books, you will not regret it!
I've read everything N.L. Hoffmann has written to date and I've loved all of it. With that being said, The Monster I've Become was a little harder for me to get into. I love the fact that we see characters from The Daughters of Darkness trilogy, especially Lucifer, but I didn't really like the female MC. She was a bit too intense for me at times but other than that I very much enjoy the premise of this book. Mrs. Hoffmann throws in some new creatures and mythology for us and I can't wait to see where the next book takes us.
There is also the signature humor throughout and you find yourself laughing out of the blue. The pace and flow were steady and once I started I didn't stop until I was finished. We learn new and interesting things in this book that I'm eager to explore in the next installment. Well done and I'm excited for the start of another read from the author.
The humor was right on, I love the snark and quips exchanged between the characters. I was happy to see cameos of characters from the previous books. I also liked the idea of a Malefic and how they fit in the paranormal world. She doesn’t pull punches when describing things and that is clearly shown when talking about Tate’s powers. Bugs are just ... so gross. I can deal with spiders, snakes, and things of that nature, but roaches? Oh, hell no, thnx bibi. I wasn’t all that clear on what exactly the extent of her powers were and the fact that they are even scarier than shadows made me wonder more about it. Maybe when I read it again things will become more understandable
Some things seemed to be really convenient for Tate, a secret lair, uber powers, hurm.... No book is perfect and I did like this book, though one of the big things that bothered me was the ending. It seemed kinda anti-climatic; there was this big build up and just ... okay it is over? Did I miss something? I had to re-read the last part of the book to make sure I didn’t miss something.
There are a lot of things that I like about Hoffman’s writing one being her sense of humor and another being her character and world building. Another is her use of beings from the paranormal world. An author you like isn’t going to “hit it outta the park” with every book, there were some things that I liked very much in this book and something’s that I wasn’t too wild about, but I will certainly check-out the next installment of this series.
