Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones, and Sigourney Weaver star in this visually spectacular and stunningly emotional drama. Young Conor's life takes a turn after his mother (Felicity Jones) becomes ill and he moves in with his unsympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver). As an escape, Conor turns to his artwork and conjures up a 40-foot-high monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) who becomes a most unlikely ally by guiding him on a journey of courage, faith and truth that powerfully fuses imagination and reality.

All in such a easy to absorb format. The drawing is new and adds a bond that is not in the books but fits.
But interestingly enough, I love everything about A Monster Calls as a movie. The movie starts and introduces us to young Connor (played wonderfully by Lewis MacDougall). What I found most captivating about his character is not only how real he was able to make Connor seem, but also how he was able to make the character's actions understandable. His eyes are both expressive and full of curiousity-and whenever he's crying you'll usually end up crying along with him. Felicity Jones also shares great chemistry with her young co-star starring as his mom Lizzie. It's heartbreaking throughout the film to watch the circumstances, but Jones makes certain that she gives a memorable portrayal throughout the movie. Sigourney Weaver and Toby Kebell are also wonderful in the film as Connor's grandmother and father.
Liam Neeson's vocal talents also adds wonders to A Monster Calls. The dynamic shared between the Monster and Connor further deepens the film's plot-but it is impressive how the movie maintains a consistent tone even when it risks uneven pacing. J.A. Bayona and Patrick Weiss both deserve recognition for being able to successfully adapt the book and translate it effectively to film.
So I'd indeed say that January does absolutely have a great movie in A Monster Calls. The only thing I regret was that I neglected to bring tissues, because even though I expected to cry-I certainly didn't expect to cry as much as I did.
