About the Product
  • Pack of four, 10.4 ounce boxes (total 41.6 ounce)
  • Frosted chocolate flavored cereal with marshmallows
  • Count Chocula was the first of the new line of monster cereals

Product Description

Count Chocula debuted in 1971, the first of a new line of so called Monster Cereals i.e., cereals named after the monster characters who starred in the TV commercials that advertised them. Frankenberry followed later that year, then Boo Berry and Fruit Brute in 1973, and finally Yummy Mummy (not officially a part of the line) in 1987. Choc was not just the first, but also the most popular of the bunch.

First of all, nobody told me this cereal was getting discontinued in the stores. Big mistake. I almost went Fruit Brute in my city chasing cars and stealing babies. I don't know who came up with the horrible horrible horrible idea to discontinue selling the physical embodiment of delicious. For the last few weeks I've been eating Cocoa Puffs trying to pretend like everything was okay. Well you know what? It wasn't okay. Eating Cocoa Puffs in place of Count Chocula is like dating a girl that looks sort of like the woman you love. You're only fooling yourself. Count Chocula is the best cereal ever. Period.

I won't go into detail on how amazing this cereal is, because I feel the above comments say enough.

What I will enlighten the lovers of this cereal about is its current availability. I wrote to General Mills Corp about this cereal, and this is what a representative from their Consumer Services department came back with:

Thank you for contacting General Mills. Your comments are important to us.

We are committed to making a difference in the lives of our consumers. Feedback such as yours is important to the nature of our business.

The Count Chocula cereal is a seasonal product, available in the Fall. Please watch the store shelves this Fall for the product to return. The product has a long shelf life. If you would like to stock up in the Fall, check the dates on the packages to see how long you will have to use the product for an extra special treat throughout the year.

We appreciate your loyalty and the time you took to contact us. Please be assured that we will share your thoughts with the appropriate individuals.

In summary: If you're looking for this cereal to resurface, keep your eyes on store shelves once the weather cools down and the leaves start to change colors.

Count Chocula is my wife's favorite cereal. She is currently pregnant and dealing with a lot of nausea. One of the only things she can eat without a problem is Count Chocula.

Ever since Count Chocula became a seasonal cereal (presumably so stores could squeeze yet another variety of Cheerios on their shelves), buying a box has become a form of Stocking Roulette: does your favorite store carry it? Is it in stock today? Did the person before you buy all 4 boxes of it? Will they get more, or do you need to check at another store?

If you don't want to play that game, one alternative is to pay a little more and have someone else do the shopping for you, which is what you get here. The nice thing is that you can end up with Count Chocula months after it was (barely) available ... but remember that what you're getting is essentially the same thing that was stocked in October. Box cereal does tend to keep for months unopened, but if you're ordering this in April or May, you'd better be a big fan. I got my cereal in early April 2014 and had months before the "Better before" date (July 3, 2014 for my batch), which was enough time for me to eat all four boxes.

It's not the same as being able to buy it year-round (thanks, General Mills, for taking away yet another of the products I like), and of course places that sell it have to get those boxes from somewhere (which generally means fewer boxes for us - I don't see General Mills making a bunch extra if it sells out quicker), but it's better than not being able to get it at all. And who knows? If enough of us keep the secondary market alive, maybe someday we'll be able to buy the Halloween series of cereal year-round again.

Count Chocula tastes a little different than I remember. That could be because my taste buds have changed and it could be that the version of my childhood wasn't whole grain as this one is; probably both. I bought the four boxes because they weren't available in my neighborhood yet and not only were they satisfying from a nostalgia point of view, I actually managed to eat them all! The "new" taste grew on me as it went on, I suppose.

The stores decided they wouldn't carry this year round. This is only a Halloween item in their minds. That's a terrible decision. This is the best cereal in the world. It's not even subjective.

As a foreigner student, I never had the chance to try this cereal in my country, but last November I saw it on the shelves of my local store and decided to try it out and damn, I loved it to death! It is hard to describe the taste, but it is different than Cocoa puffs and other chocolate cerals, also, it has marshmallows so that is even better!
Unfortunately they are not in stores anymore and I had to buy other alternatives, while they were good they were not half as good as this one. A million thanks to this seller for selling 4 boxes for such a low price!

This was a gift for my boyfriend for Christmas. He was excited to get 4 boxes of his favorite cereal and didn't have to wait until next Halloween.

The boxes were shipped in good/great condition and the expiration dates were far enough in the future that there was/is not an issue with freshness. Shipment was prompt. I would order this product again from this seller.
