Monster Kids: How Pokémon Taught a Generation to Catch Them All Paperback – October 4, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
The definitive, behind-the-scenes look at why Pokémon's evolution from a single Japanese video game to global powerhouse captured the world's attention, and how the "gotta catch 'em all" mentality of its fanbase shaped pop culture—and continues to do so today.
More than just a simple journey through the history of Pokémon, Daniel Dockery offers an in-depth look at the franchise’s many branches of impact and influence. With dozens of firsthand interviews, Monster Kids covers its beginnings as a Japanese video game created to recapture one man's love of bug-collecting as a child before diving into the decisions and conditions that would ultimately lead to that game's global domination. With its continued growth as television shows, spin-off video games, blockbuster movies, trading cards, and toys, Pokémon is a unique and special brand that manages to continue to capture the attention and adoration of its eager fanbase 25 years after its initial release.Whether it was new animated shows like Digimon, Cardcaptors, and Yu-Gi-Oh!; the rise of monster-catching video games and trading card games; and more, Pikachu, the king of pop culture in the '90s, opened the doors in America to those hoping to capture some of Pokémon's dedicated fans. In Monster Kids, Dockery combines the personal stories of the people who helped bring Pokémon to the global stage with affection and humor, making this book the ultimate look at the rise of the franchise in Japan and then North America, but also the generation of kids whose passion for "catching them all" created a unique cultural phenomenon that continues to make a profound impact today.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2025Pokemon fans are blessed to have information available to them everywhere, from scholastic books to “deep-dive” YouTube series.
This book taught me things that I had never been exposed to despite all the information that is out there. It also told me stories I already knew with new context or additional details. And the author’s love for the series (and other monster-collecting series) really shines through.
This is definitely worth reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2023Despite being part of the Pokémon generation, I never got into it at all. I remember there being toys at McDonald's and a lot of my friends going to see the first movie to come out in the U.S. I knew there was the main one called Pikachu and a pink one named Jigglypuff, but that was where my knowledge ended.
Then I grew up and my niece got into Pokémon. This was a disaster for someone who wanted to maintain their image as a cool and knowledgeable aunt. But how to learn everything about this stuff without watching hours of episodes and movies?
This book has become my Pokémon bible. For something I knew and cared nothing about, it was unexpectedly SO much fun to read. It treats the topic with the seriousness and depth I now know it deserves, but it is also funny, fun, and made me feel like I was back in school taking part in this cultural phenomenon. I can't praise the writing enough; it made it a breezy read. You can tell the author is in love with his topic, as are those he interviews. It's a deeply personal book in that way. Really, it's a love letter to Pokémon and it fully succeeded in making me fall in love with it too.
I've been wowing my niece with my knowledge and can't wait until she'd old enough to read it herself. Until then I highly recommend it to everyone else, even if you are just wondering how this whole Pokémon thing got so big.
