Good headphones depending on your musical tastes
on April 25, 2012
I wasn't sure what to expect when I received my Monster NCredible NTune On-Ear Headphones. When I think of "Monster", I think of overpriced audio/video cables and accessories. For the most part, I was pleasantly surprised after trying out the Monster NCredible NTune Headphones. Right out of the box though, I was disappointed by a couple of things. The included cable is quite short. It has a 1/8" plug for connecting to most portable electronics. Much to my astonishment, Monster does not include a standard 1/4" adapter for listening to most home audio systems. I own several pairs of full size headphones from various other manufacturers, and all of them have both 1/8" and 1/4" plugs included. Since I already have an adapter, this wasn't an issue for me. But if I didn't have one on hand, I would have not been happy. The included cable is detachable from the headphones, and this is a positive. The headphones themselves are lightweight for an "on-ear" headphone, and comfortable. The build quality seems OK, but nothing special. I tested them using my portable iPod, and my home Onkyo audio system. I listened to several types of music, and turned off all equalization in order to hear what the headphones really sounded like without any "help". Right from the start, I noticed the headphones delivered strong, powerful bass. Even if I cranked them up to the maximum safe listening level, the bass did not distort. This is something even my high end Sennheisers can not handle. Listening to Rock and today's new Electronic Music at loud volumes sounded great. When I changed the pace and toned it down with some Jazz, New Age, and Classical Music, etc at lower volumes, this is where the Monster NCredible NTunes didn't shine. They by no means sounded awful, but their performance was no better than average. Even at lower volumes, the lows overpower the mid-range. If mid-range is important to you, then the Monster NCredible NTunes may not be for you. It is definitely not the NTUnes strong point. The "highs" or treble on the NTunes is good. Nothing spectacular, but I didn't feel like I was missing something like I did with the mid-range. After spending a few hours with the Monster NCredible NTunes, I can recommend them if you enjoy listening at loud volumes, with brain rattling bass. Since I do, I give them a solid 4 stars. If you enjoy listening to mellow music at lower volumes, then I would look elsewhere. For this, you can do better for less money.
