Almost passed on this Monster iSport Victory Headphone set when it showed up as an Amazon Vine selection but am now quite glad that I didn't, because these have turned out to be among the best that I've had occasion to use... period.
But first the general likes and dislikes, for those who need to know...
+ Excellent sound; rich bass and high, clear trebles
+ Exceptionally comfortable; can be worn for hours
+ Complete noise isolation; good for private listening
+ Easily accessible controls; located on the left cord
+ Customization for the user; many different ear tips
+ Tangle-free flat cord; keeps it easy in use
+ Right-angle jack; moves freely with the cord
+ Lightweight yet sturdy; good strain relief on key areas
+ Comes with clasp pouch case; keeps headphones well protected
+ Washable tips; antimicrobial agent cuts down on germs
- Maybe the lime-green color, but that's a highly subjective stretch
◆ First Impressions:
These headphones arrived in one of the most elaborate boxes that I've seen in awhile, one that made this reviewer and listener hope that they would live up to the standards of the packaging. Putting it simply, they did, and without any of that deplorable clam-shell material. Within this package were the headphones themselves, a wide array of ear tips, a convenient clasp pouch case, and a number of directions and instructions on how to best fit these headphones for your personal use and comfort.
By the name alone, one could figure out that these are designed for an iPod, an iPad or iPhone, so I dug out my basic iPod Shuffle to see how well they would perform. But that was only part of it, as the probable use would not be limited to the iPod. Though the ControlTalk in-line mic is designed with hands-free calling controls for the iPod, iPhone and iPad, it may (or may not) work with your individual smartphone, so you'll need to check with Monster to see if it will function.
◆ Audio Listening:
After some basic tests with my iPod Shuffle and with my Samsung Galaxy S III (with which the ControlTalk in-line microphone did not work), I tested this headset on my Windows 7 notebook PC, as that's where most of my audio selections are stored and kept for uploading to other devices. Kept the customization and equalization off, running it as "flat" and without alteration. My musical tastes are quite eclectic, and within a few hours, I had played a wide range of tracks, selections from Adele, Leonard Cohen, Whitney Houston, Tom Waits, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Regina Spektor, Paolo Conte, Five for Fighting, Al Jarreau, Buckwheat Zydeco, Carl Orff's O Fortuna (Carmina Burana), Amy Winehouse, The B52s, Enya, Quynh Anh, Pachelbel's Canon in D and more.
The sounds were quite clear and accurate, and the 'transparency' throughout the frequency range resulted in good delineating of instruments and voices. It was easy to hear the fingers sliding on acoustic guitar strings, the light whoosh of a flute, the brassy notes of a trombone, the distant tinkle of a softly struck triangle at the back of the stage, the rich boom of kettle drums, and the glisten and afterglow of a brushed cymbal. Bass sounds are important to most of us listeners, as it's the rhythmic underpinning of much music, and in this respect, the iSport Victory headset did not disappoint. Fading tails of sound decaying away in all ranges are easily distinguishable and followed to its silence. Spatial clues and sound reflections are accurate, such as naturally recorded hall ambiance and fingers going down a keyboard.
But I had to test this a bit further, using an album that I've used over the years to test larger home speakers and sub-woofers, an album that to many audiophiles is the so-called 'gold standard' for testing the capabilities of speakers, a pure digital (DDD) CD that's been around since the '70s. The album is Time Warp, but I strongly suggest that if you get it, read the reviews first and follow the advice of those who say to be conservative and turn your volume very low. This one has been known to make your tweeters turn to a dying squawk, and to deteriorate the foam surround on your bass speakers and subs, and I'm not joking.
This Monster iSport Victory Headphone set held up quite well under my tests with that CD, even with the low sub-30Hz sounds of the first twenty seconds of the digitally-recorded Introduction to Also Sprach Zarathustra, known to many as the "Theme from 2001, A Space Odyssey." I had to play that 1:50 track a number of times, astonished, as it was the first time in years that I had heard the full range of this particular piece which come out sounding like a sputtering motorboat on many full headphones and speakers costing far more than these.
From there I went to a more recent acquisition, which is pianist Beth Levin's A Single Breath: Beethoven's Last Three Piano Sonatas. The clarity was incredible listening to each track, and though these in-ear headphones are primarily designed those wanting to enjoy a "tuned for sports" experience than for the audiophile who wants to kick back and enjoy the music, it was quite enjoyable to listen to the full range of this new recording.
This Monster iSport Victory Headphone set far exceeded my expectations, to put it bluntly. It's a product like many other high-quality headphones that may require some burn-in time to get to their peak performance levels, but for a product right out of the box, these are astonishing. I've paid more than double the price of these in the past and been satisfied with the sound, and it's surprising to find such rich, high-end sound with a mid-range price. These set a new standard of comfort and listening pleasure, a true criteria against which others can be compared.
How does one write an intelligent product review on the finest earphones that one has ever experienced without using the word "Wow!" somewhere in the copy? I'll just say that this is highly recommended as being a truly superlative product that needs to be experienced.
I had the Livestrong version of these, which were fantastic until a little over a year in, the plastic started peeling off the controls. So I got these as a replacement from Monster.
I am now on my 3rd set of these. The controls have lasted TWO WEEKS before ceasing to function. I have replaced my iPod twice thinking that was the issue. I have a work iPhone 5 and a personal iPhone 4S, neither work properly with the headphones. Feedback also starts in on the left earbud on both of my last sets.
That set, for working out, there isn't a better sounding headphone out there. I've tried:
Yurbuds (tin cans)
Bose iE2 (didn't like the fit)
Bluebuds X (doesn't stay in for long runs)
Klipsch (sound wasn't worth $)
These headphones fit like a glove. I mean I never even have to adjust them for a 12 mile run. They sound awesome for a sport headphone. I use Bowers & Wilkins C5's if I'm not working out.
The plastic parts look spraypainted and cheap. The controls wear out in weeks. Monster... you poured a lot of money into the R&D and fit... why would you skimp on quality control???
The BEST sounding, BEST fitting, LEAST reliable sport headphone that I've found out there.
I contacted the seller and they told me it's a Manufacturer issue. Basically they are Falsely selling this as working with the popular Apple products and when you discover they do not - they push you to Monster that will inform you it's not Apple comparable. Then if you want to return given it won't work, the seller keeps 50% or more of your purchase price!! This is criminal!
