Monsterpocalypse is a fast moving, action packed strategy game played with high quality collectible miniatures portraying the most fearsome giant monsters ever imagined! Each battle takes place in a city, which you and your opponent construct by placing models of buildings on a city map. Players will then build their force from their respective collection of models. Each force will consist of a giant monster model, and several supporting units (tanks, flying vehicles, creatures-depending upon which of the themed factions you decide to play). Purchasing Booster Boxes will expand your collection, giving you more tactical options and abilities to better suit your strategy. When the battle begins, you command your monster and lead your units into the city to hunt down and destroy your opponent's monster. To accomplish your mission, your monster and units each have weapons and abilities that are activated by special dice. Monsters can increase their power throughout the game by smashing buildings and destroying enemy units. When two monsters fight each other, the results are devastating-they can throw each other across the city, slam into buildings, and suplex each other into radioactive rubble! The last monster standing wins the game! This Monsterpocalypse starter set contains everything 1 player needs to start playing. Includes 8 fully-assembled, pre-painted plastic figures including 1 monster and 1 corresponding monster hyper form, 2 buildings and 4 units. Includes 24 specialty dice, rulebook playmap, Game Walk-through, reference card, monster health tracker.

The game itself is great: Giant monsters smahing each other across a cityscape. The game has basic rules which will allow younger (6-8) players to have fun with it, but it is the advanced rules that make it shine. There are some pretty complex strategis to be employed, most often concerning with the game's "dice economy" system.
As for drawbacks, the big one for the starter set is lack of buildings: 2 is not nearly enough to fully experience the game in all of it's bonecrunching action and city leveling mayhem (I'd say eight buildings is minimum). I would have liked another unit included as well, but that is me.
All in all, this is a great game, and the Starter is the ideal way to get introduced to it.
The starter set contains 1 (randomly picked) Monster and an alternate form of same monster needed to play. Each starter set contains the same 4 units (smaller models) and the same 2 buildings.
In addition to this the set contains the rules, the dice, the playing surface, and other bits and pieces needed to play the game.
In general you are going to need to start buying booster packs in order to play competitively. My brother and I each picked up the starter and a booster and have had some pretty competative games. I can see, however, where people will easily spends hundreds of dollars to collect everything they want. If you look at it like a board game, you are going to spend [...] bucks to play a tooled down version of it.
It's fun, but if you can't leave well enough alone and like to min-max you are going to spend some serious money. Myself, I'm happy with a few monsters and a few buildings and several evenings of games.
My low rating has nothing to do with gameplay. I bought a starter and one of each booster before I found out you can't actually play a game out of the starter box. I now have to purchase another starter before I'll know if the game is any good.
