Paleontologist Grant Coleman has written a book about his last adventure titled Cavern of the Damned. He teaches at a university, but with his ex-wife's alimony, he thought the writing success would put money in his pocket. His wife finds out about his writing success and wants a cut. Luckily, Grant's been offered another exploration job. Paleontologist Grant Coleman and activist Janaina Silva are recruited by Thana Katsoros for a top-secret expedition, one in search of a live Apatosaurus on a plateau deep in the Amazonian rainforest.
The expedition doesn't go as planned. The plane crashes short of their intended destination. Surviving the plane crash is the easy part. Once they're on the ground they must fight to survive in the unknown environment with ancient dinosaurs. This book is filled with giant ants and flesh-eating pterosaurs. What's not to love?
There's enough scares and action to satisfy any horror fan. MONSTERS IN THE CLOUDS kept getting better! I couldn't put it down. I ended up reading it in one sitting. I am a fan of Grant Coleman because he is a well-rounded character who gets himself in and out of sticky situations. The supporting characters are just as important to the story as Grant. The story stays tight all the way through. The dialogue is great. The writing is solid, too.
If you haven't read Russell James, then you should change that immediately. This series is so much fun! It's a great escape! The books are quick reads!
5/5 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I'd never heard of the author before and completely missed book one, but this works as a standalone. Having read this, I will go back and read the first book, though.
From the first few pages, I was in. I loved our main character and simply loved our chompy things! The author makes them fearsome and believable.
The book is very funny. Our main character is snarky, but he's also got a lot of heart. And the adventure is stellar. Lots of pulse pounding scenes.
I didn't quite believe in our solution to everything. It seemed a little too convenient.
But otherwise I totally involved in this one and can't wait to read the author again.

Well, as is so often the case with these books plenty can and does. Monsters in the Clouds is a fun and fast adventure. James’ character, Grant Coleman is great. He isn’t some macho meathead, he’s simply a palaeontologist looking to make something of himself by seeking adventure, and he has a few funny quirks and I enjoyed his sarcasm. Forget about the rest of the crew, they are but fodder for the monsters that roam the Amazon.
Regulars here will know I love a good dinosaur adventure and I really dug Monsters in the Clouds. It has pretty much everything I want from a dino book: expendable characters, man-eating ants! dinosaurs (obviously!) and plenty of action. The book moves at a terrific pace, there’s barely time to catch a breath as Coleman and his motley crew shamble from one perilous situation to the next. The jungle is a nasty place as you’d well imagine and the confrontations with the various beasts lurking within provide high entertainment and gore. James is one of the very best in the business at writing this kind of book along with Hunter Shea. Just switch off your brain and strap yourself in for a fun-filled, exciting two hours reading.
4/5 narrow escapes from the Grim Reader.
