About the Author

Steven Heller, Ph.D. was widely in demand as a clinician, lecturer and trainer of the Ericksonian method, as well as his own method, Unconscious Restructuring®. Through his seminar program, Clinical Hypnosis: Innovative Techniques® Dr. Heller was one of the first individuals to present what was to become known as "Ericksonian hypnotherapy." He became known as the "trainer of the trainers," and was given the name "The Wizard."

Dr. Heller also trained members of the helping professions, and conducted in-house training programs for hospital staffs, universities, medical, dental and psychological associations. He was a guest on several radio and television programs. Dr. Heller received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from California Western University, where his special area of study was, of course, hypnosis. He was born in Los Angeles in 1939; he died in 1997.

This is not a bad book. Heller clearly understands hypnosis. My issues are with the length and format. As short as this book is, it's still too long. The same message is put forth in "How to Hypnotise Anyone - Confessions of a Rogue Hypnotist". That book can be read in about 2 hours. And if you have Prime, it's a free book. Heller's format is to give a mountain of examples. I often found myself following a story without connection followed by a two-paragraph summary. I would have liked a two-paragraph story with a two-page explanation.

If you want a good read for a good read's sake, then get this book. But if you merely want the information as quick as possible, then look elsewhere.

I didn't know that hypnosis came so naturally--to everyone. Before I read this book I thought of hypnosis as the sort of pendulum-swinging practice that the media and skeptics portray, not realizing that hypnosis is a form of learning that we all do, actively and (un)intentionally, since childhood. This book allowed me to open my mind about how stories affect people, how words affect people, how people structure beliefs, and how "that state" happens when we least expect it all the while enjoying every minute of it. While the book did delve into some "clinical talk," the author always followed it up with humor and simplification (for all systems). I found it very light, clear, and conversational.

When the book ended I felt deeply saddened by the fact that the author has passed away, as though he had become a friend by the end of the book. He convinced me that there is no such thing as hypnosis, that we've been hypnotized by ourselves and others to think that there is such a thing. It's really too bad that there won't be more books by him.

Dr. Heller and his associates have written a terrific book introducing you the concepts of hypnosis and how it may manifest itself when put to use. It is written concisely in an easy to understand tone giving the reader a basic but yet comprehensive approach to the topic. In this book Dr. Heller first describes concepts and then ties those concepts to his experiences as a professional practitioner helping others.

If you desire to get acquainted with the topic of hypnosis without PhD complexity then this book is must have. I highly recommend and is worth five stars!

I ordered this book at the recommendation of Robert G.Smith the Faster EFT Coach. As a hypnotherapist who has been learning and practicing professionally for 20 years I have to say I was impressed by Steven Heller and his coverage of material. What impressed me was his observation that to be successful in working with clients you must treat each person as an individual. He explains the use of SYSTEMS to connect more easily with a clients preferred method of learning information, then takes it a step further by giving examples of how to speak in their language. Some might say this is a part of NLP, but any good therapist knows that a big box of tools is needed to work with whatever a client presents in session. Steven Heller provides a handy reference for anyone wishing to have a clear understanding of the way to treat common problems presented to the practicing hypnotherapist.

This man, Steven Heller, was great! I have read many books about Hypnosis, but in my opinion, this is the best. Even better of Milton Erickson.
I found this book not so easy at the beginning. English is not my language and to master 'anchor process' one need a lot of work.
Unfortunately, this book is not very known in the community, is not translated in my language (Italian).
I loved this Book so much that I read already 3 times.
I am so sorry that Dr. Heller is died (1997) and that I have not so many informations about him and his 'Unconscious Restructuring'.
I found that many many hypnotists have taken inspirations from him and I think that also the famous Disney cartoon 'Monsters & co' could thank Dr. Steven Heller because is clearly inspired by an episode inside the book.
'Monsters and Magical Sticks' deserves 5 Stars and... many many praises!

I enjoyed this book immensely. Although much of what's written came to me as common sense, I needed an underscoring of what I and most of us already know--that to be effective we need to work on replacing a client's negative metaphor with another positive one. That makes so much sense to me. The only complaint I have (hence the 4 star rating) is the fact that I have the 8th edition, which was printed in 2009, and amazingly there are still numerous typos and grammatical errors. Why haven't any of these errors been caught yet? Hopefully, in the next printing, the publisher will do this fine author a favor and correct these needless flaws so that at least those of us who value the English language can put all our energy on the book's immensely helpful content.

Even with all the golden reviews under its belt, my expectations for the book weren't especially high (as I've already read a dozen other books relating to hypnosis). Surprisingly, however, "Monsters and Magical Sticks" turned out to be one of my favorite books of all time. It doesn't simply bombard you with new information, but more so paints a picture of a side to the world that we usually don't even peek.

Aside from the actual techniques (useful both for yourself and to use on others), a thorough diagnostic "cheat sheet" of the mind, and explanations of the many "hypnotic phenomena," the most striking quality (in my opinion) of the books rests in its ability to literally morph reality around you as your brain digests the words.

Put shortly, it's a masterpiece.

Repetitive, argumentative and anecdotal book which basically says, "If hypnosis isn't real then explain what happened this one time?" a lot.

If you don't believe that *you* can be hypnotised then you already believe in hypnosis, and if you don't believe it exists you can still be hypnotised, it's what language is and does and this book gives ample examples if you're somehow confused by the concept.

Some cute stories, but it's not a textbook or a cookbook and I'm not sure who it's for.

I would recommend "My Voice Will Go With You" feat Milt Erickson instead.

I found the author to be unclear in his description of sensory systems. At first he defined the out of conscious system as being indicated by eye movements but when describing a patient's case (R) he defines it in terms of the absence of eye movements. The author may be a competent therapist but he should at least have read his own book and checked it for mistakes like this. A book like this cannot afford to be anything but clear in its definitions.

This is one of the best books I have read on hypnosis for a long time, and I have studied the subject on and off since the 70s. Not only does the author give clear instructions and wording examples for his techniques, but also explains how most problems presented by clients/patients are the result of "hypnotic" transactions from the past. The chapters on "Anchoring" are particularly helpful as they give several examples of how this technique can be used to powerful effect, to get results which would normally take several sessions. Highly recommended for the practitioner and lay person alike.

This is a great book on Hypnosis and NLP - I read this book a number of years ago before I became a qualified Hypnotist and have read it again since - needless to say the second time I got a lot more from it. I really liked the work on eye access cuing in this book, its a little different from some of the material in brander for example, and Heller give some great ideas about Therapeutic uses. Personally I rank this as one of the top ten must have books on Hypnosis and NLP.
