Editorial Reviews

KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK: THE HOME RECORDINGS is the highly anticipated soundtrack to the Brett Morgen documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. This 31 track Deluxe edition on 2LP 180 gram vinyl is an aural complement to the documentary in both concept and experience. The soundtrack is comprised from various early and raw cassette recordings made by Kurt alone, the soundtrack allows a rare, unfiltered glimpse into Cobain's creative progression from early song snippets and short demos to musical experiments and ultimately, pieces of songs or lyrics that eventually appeared on later Nirvana albums.

Imagine being a musician, recording rough ideas down to tape so you don't forget them.

You finally turn most of those ideas into songs people know and love.

Then you die and everything you ever made gets released, even if it wasn't intended to be and isn't worth buying, because it's just rough scrappy ideas, not fully formed and completed songs people listen to for enjoyment... Welcome to 'Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings' the latest cash grab release from Universal Music.

I'm a huge Nirvana fan but even i'm not daft enough to consider this thing worth owning unless you're a completist. When are you going to feel the desire to listen to this? There's no replay value. the 'With The Lights Out' box set already covered what this album attempts to do better (Those Outcesticide bootlegs did too).

I've been a Nirvana fan since 1990 and I've never been so repulsed by a posthumous release of any artist's work as this one. The "songs" included here are not songs--they're sketches and snippets of sounds, chord progressions, and ideas that Kurt Cobain clearly never intended for the public to hear. As such, they are barely music at all, more like the notes and ideas a novelist might jot down in a notebook with the intention of fleshing out later. No writer would ever want to share those notes with his or her audience, and the audience would be perplexed and left mystified by reading them. That's the feeling that hearing this travesty gives you: that you've just intruded on the personal space of a dead person against his will and have been conned into doing so by the greedy hands pulling the purse strings of his estate. I'll admit: I was fooled by the marketing that pitched this as a Cobain "solo" album, a collection of viable never-before-heard songs. But I felt remorse and guilt after listening to this once and quickly got rid of it.

This is complete garbage, the few tracks Kurt actually sings on are such bad quality you can bearly hear anything the rest of this pile of dung is just commercial voices talking, distorted garbage or inaudible noise. This is such an insult to the memory of Kurt Cobain and as far as I'm concerned it never happened, still have my complete awesome Nirvana collection but this is just a shameful cash in on Kurts name. I cannot believe this was even released, it's disgusting! Total rip off and an obvious cash in scam on Nirvana fans, disgusting!

This is perhaps the worst example of shameless individual and corporate greed I have ever seen and now heard. This actually makes the movie look good in comparison. Brett Morgan is perhaps the sleaziest human being on the planet for several reasons. First for making the atrocity Montage of Heck, (Trash) filled with lies and half truths and never coming close to portraying Kurt Cobain in an honest and biographical manner. It was clearly made under the direction of his "widow" in order to clean things up for her ongoing pathetic miserable and tragic existence.

Now he has the audacity to release Mr. Cobain's private home recordings which are basically composed of feedback, nonsensical gibberish, stoned out rantings, feedback and a montage of CRAP! Music it is not! This a pathetic maneuver in order to make some quick cash for himself and the widow. He should be ashamed of himself for this blatant act of theft and piracy.

Morgan goes around stating he knows Kurt Cobain after a result of doing this film. That statement alone is almost laughable! Based on what we know of Kurt Cobain he never would have had anything to do with Morgan let alone signed off on his releasing any of this material, if you can call it that. It's all a bunch of hype on Morgan's part and be forwarded before hitting purchase your basically getting an annoying series of nonsense and noise, not music.

This grouping of "songs" (mostly sound effects and feedback) recorded over a period of years by Mr. Cobain is nothing but his private diary of thoughts and material and you can be certain he would have been horrified to learn these intimate moments had ben released to the general public. For Morgan to say this is the first Kurt Cobain "solo" album is nothing but an outright lie.

It's funny, reading the recent reviews of Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings reminded me a lot of reading the reviews of Sliver: Best of the Box. First things first: I AM NOT ADDRESSING THE TOPIC OF 'MILKING THE CASH COW', RECORD COMPANY GREED, ETC here, I am here to speak strictly of the content. Some recurring review themes regarding Sliver: Best of the Box and MOH: The Home Recordings: "Oh, the quality is terrible, can't believe I payed $XX.XX for this", "This is just Kurt making random noises, stay away" , etc etc etc. People, know what you're getting into here. This album is not about the "music," per say. This is about documenting the creative thought process of one of the last great musicians, ever. Is it an invasion of his privacy? Maybe. But, so were the Journals. For hardcore fans who thrive on the slightest bit of newly-surfaced material, this album is absolute gold. Non-hardcore fans won't understand it. My best advice is to know what you're purchasing. This isn't an "acoustic solo album," this is something entirely in its own category. Its creative, well put together, and very fun to listen to. Hardcare fans: "Pay to Play" this one.
