Holly Brandt was the daughter of a soldier and Indian. Living in her life at Forts until her father left the military and went to work in the mines, but with his death, came hardship, and if it weren’t for Myrtle Randolph giving her a place to stay and job in her café, she isn’t sure what would have become of her. Now that Myrtle’s health is declining, she decides to sell her restaurant and move to Billings to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Will Holly be welcomed by Myrtle’s family or left stranded?
Nolan Clancey left home and joined the military when the girl he was sweet on married another man. He had been raised by his paternal grandparents and is returning home to Clear Creek, Kansas to help them in the family business, Clancey Café. Coming home with dreams of his future, brings shock at the deterioration of his grandparent’s health and the family café.
The story is a sad reality of bigotry towards Indians and especially those who are considered half-breeds, like Holly. No matter how talented, helpful, kind, and outgoing Holly is, people, treat her unkindly, say hateful things, and let her know she is not welcome. Nolan was raised to treat a lady with respect, and he sees the goodness in Holly. Can these two have a chance at a future or will prejudice get in the way? What happens when even his own family tries to sabotage his relationship and his first love is back in town, and now she wants him?
Yet another great book by Linda!
Holly Brandt is working in a cafe when her employer is injured, Holly finds herself in need of help.
Nolan steps in to help Holly with the cafe while he is in town. When Holly’s employer decides to move to be with her daughter, Nolan vows to help Holly however he can. He just didn’t know how much help he would need to give.
This is a great story of compassion and love. I defiantly recommend this book and all of Linda’s books
