Update: Spoke to customer service. He told me the problem was probably a bad starting capacitor. He said he just handled the same problem that morning. When I get back there in January, I'll replace the capacitor to see if that repairs it. If it does, I'll update my review.
Update: Installed the new capacitor. It now rotates at all speeds but still has a hum which is louder at higher speeds. However, the manufacturer demonstrated excellent customer service. They sent me a whole new fan - three years after I bought it!
Plus side: good quality parts, fit & finish. Ours was balanced right out of the box. Packed well, with rubber stabilizers attached to the rotating assembly.
Minus side: flanges on the center housing and fan blade hubs put the fan blade mounting screw holes effectively in a tunnel, making fan blade installation difficult with the fan mounted on the ceiling. Found myself wishing for a third arm to do this.
I'd have an optional order of assembly in the instructions, where the fan, including the blades, is assembled before hanging from the ceiling mount. Two people or one fairlly strong person could hang the completed fan and it would be much easier than assembling a dangling fan while working from a ladder.
It's a new fan, so can't speak to durability, but now that it's up and running I'm sure we'll get many years of service out of it.
Pros: They look great and people love them. They still act and look like their brand new. Easy as any other ceiling fans to install.
Cons: They only came with a 3" rod and had to take them down and add a 12" one because you couldn’t feel the breeze of the fan. I had to hook them up to two different switches (one for fan and one for lights) that have dimmers so I could control them.
Tip: If you have more than one fan do not try to make them work with a remote control because if one doesn’t get the signal then it will be out of whack with the rest forever.
By the time you add it all up you might have other choices.
Does not seem to be compatible with lights, rods, remotes from Home Depot or other manufacturers so you have to buy theirs.
By the time you get through you are around $400.
Once I realized this I tried to return but they are strict on the 30 day return policy. FYI
