Another thing that I loved about this book was that Laura might yearn for a knight in shining armor, but she's not going to let herself fall blindly into a fantasy either. She's her own independent woman and while I occasionally found myself wishing that she had a little more romance in her soul, I completely understood how it had gotten stomped out. She's wonderfully raw in her emotions and her loyalties.
The romance is not the main focus of this book, although it's a very satisfying part of it. I loved that the family, old traumas, and the social connotations were just as big a part of the book as the love story. Definitely a good read, and definitely not just another trashy romance novel (although believe me, I love those as much as the next girl!)
First off, I have to say that I really like the author's writing style. She manages to tell a story without all of the explicit sex scenes that a lot of authors rely on as filler. This is the story of Laura Shore, her younger sister Corinne and her younger brother Snack, whose family has owned a nursery for multiple generations in the town of Chepaquit, on an island in the Northwestern Atlantic near Martha's Vineyard. Laura and Snack are back on the island to join Corinne in holding a memorial for their late father. The nursery has been in poor repair for years, including long before Laura and Snack left the island, and Corinne manages to convince her two siblings to stay for a month and help her get the nursery up and running again.
The romance between the two protagonists, Laura and Ken Barclay, the son of the town's bank owner, is based on an incident that occurred when Laura was 13 and he was 14. Ken, who was an undersized and skinny boy at that time, saved her from the clutches of several boys who had trapped her in the woods with nefarious intents. Ken took a severe beating in rescuing her and she sends him a thank you letter. She never hears anything back from him and is left feeling hurt and insignificant as a result. The author would have us believe that the two have been carrying a torch for each other since that time and when they meet again as adults, their feelings for each other quickly develop into love. I found this premise rather hard to swallow - that an adult romance could blossom so quickly between these two after only limited interractions, based upon the feelings of 13 and 14 year old kids. That's why I deducted another star from my rating.
The mystery part of the story was well written and I was surprised at the identity of the killer. The book was well edited, with no typos and the word usage is correct throughout, unlike so many books I've seen recently that are loaded with typos and incorrect word usage (such as "it's" and "its"; your and you're; there, they're and their, etc.). Altogether, it was a good read, if one perseveres long enough to get past the slow part of the story, but I probably won't ever read it again. Would I recommend it to my friends? Probably not; but I would recommend that they try another book by this author.
I greatly enjoyed the characters. They were well developed. And very real! I appreciate that in a good book. Ken and Laura have an embracing relationship that keeps you rooting for them all the while keeping the other characters in mind thinking.." what about Corinne? And snack?" And the author did an amazing job of including them in. And the ending was great. Which is always important! A great summer read.. well it's winter here in Illinois so that makes it a great read anytime! Tho will leave u with spring fever ;)
