I also want to disclose that I've been an enthusiastic participant in StoryADay May for several years, although I've never read the ebook for it before. I may have uttered an undignified squee when offered a review copy of this book :)
Ms. Duffy posts prompts and encouragement each day during May to support anyone interested in attempting to write a story every day. The prompts are designed to teach you about the craft of writing, and your own writing strengths, as you follow them. Reading the book as a whole showcases the care that's gone into the process. By following the daily, achievable writing goals, you engage with writing advice instead of just reading it. The book is a writer's guild to learning by doing. The practice can help anyone from the rank beginner to the experienced writer developing and growing as an author.
The book also functions as a private writing coach, someone who pushes you gently to do more than you might think you can. Ms. Duffy understands what you're likely to experience on your writing journey, and understands that every writer is an individual with different needs, preferences, and abilities. The support offered can be as valuable as the potential learning from following the prompts.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring writing!
This year, I was offered an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
The book is designed to carry the reader through 31 days of short story drafting. It begins with some tips and information about how to use it for the STaD Challenge, or at any other time, either individually or as part of a group, There are handy tips for both new and experienced writers prefacing the actual prompts, which are arranged by weekly theme - Week One, for instance, is about limits, with prompts that range from time and word restrictions to point of view and style.
For each prompt, Ms. Duffy also includes helpful tips and often humorous examples of how the reader might approach the day's writing. I've used these prompts to sketch out ideas for the first two weeks of stories, thus far. Before the writing has even commenced, I am already looking at my characters and their stories with new awareness of their depth and scope - essential for any storyteller!
Ms. Duffy's passion comes through loud and clear in every page. At the same time, the writing is concise, without wasted filler. It's a little book packed full of opportunities for growth and learning; and it's a tool I'm glad to have in my writing toolbox! Well worth the purchase price!
I was offered an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I jumped at the chance to read this year's challenge prompts in one go. It's an excellent e-book, well worth its modest price. Julie is a fine teacher, full of humor, insight, experience, and bright encouragement. She knows her stuff, and amazingly, she knows your stuff too! Julie's 2016 prompts are engaging and easy to follow and understand. She holds the writer's hand and knows exactly the right moment to let go and allow you to move forward into new creative territory. If you use these prompts, during the May Story-A-Day challenge or on your own at some other time of year, you will certainly see wonderful progress in your work, and approach your writing with excitement rather than dread.
Overcome your fears and excuses, and experience the joy of expression that grows when you find time and make time for your writing, and when you let go of the need to produce a perfect draft right now. Discover new tools. Learn skills. Practice discipline. Study your mentors. Find your voice. Read! Play! Allow yourself to write badly, as all good writers must do. Love putting words together. Thrive!
I read this book in one sitting and can't wait to get to work with it at my side, starting next week when May rolls around. I liked it so well that I bought the last two years' prompt books too, for fun.

This book will help you navigate that journey. Ms. Duffy does an excellent job of describing the process and then providing you prompts to assist you in the daily writing challenge. These prompts are fun and take the daunting out of writing a complete piece every day (no one said it had to be perfect).
This book is an excellent guide that can be used for any month and not just the May challenge. I love the prompts, encouragement and teaching that is provided here.
It is important to note that I received an advance copy of this book for a review. I would have purchased this book as I have the previous year's. It is an excellent resource for any writer or would be writer's toolbox.
