This may be the most comfortable running shoe I've ever purchased, but the tread started to wear immediately after use.
They fit like a glove and are perfect for easy trails.
They're light, fit great, and have great traction

Product Description

The Montrail Rogue Racer Trail Running Shoes feature a Gryptonite outsole. This is a sticky rubber compound that works with the micro lugs of the shoe to provide optimal grip and traction, even on wet surfaces. Horizontal and vertical flex grooves allow your foot to move more freely and lightly, whilst allowing your foot to remain comfortable and efficient. A low profile midsole helps you become faster and more efficient when running on those trails.

If running's your game, trust your passion to this utterly worthy Rogue Racer by Montrail. The low-cut shoe's mesh and synthetic upper keep things lightweight and breathable, with a rounded toe, laced vamp and padded collar and tongue preventing chafing, hotspots and other hazards on the road. Furthermore, its four-way flex grooves ensure forefoot flexibility, with a compression-molded EVA midsole lining that perfectly respects your foot's unique anatomy. Anchored by micre 3-point lugs and a non-skid sole for extreme traction, it's one sleek, sporty way to tackle the world's smoothest trails, roughest terrains and everything in between.

This may be the most comfortable running shoe I've ever purchased, but the tread started to wear immediately after use. I've put on about 60 miles and the tread is completely worn in some places. Disappointing durability.

UPDATE-The shoes only last 2.5 months. The tread is completely worn on the heal and ball of the foot. That said, these were the most comfortable running shoes I've ever run in. It's a shame the durability wasn't able to match the comfort.

Took this shoe out for it's first spin on a very steep trail this morning and was really impressed with the traction. The sole has this cool grippy rubber and a good nub configuration that even right out of the box I could tell was going to work. This shoe does not have a hard plastic plate in the sole like my old Mizuno Wave series trail runners. I purposefully stepped on a few sharp rocks and while I could feel them, wouldn't say they hurt or were really lacking anything--it was sort of like I was a little more connected with the trail. This shoe, because of its weight and design, seems to be more along the minimalist spectrum. I like it because it suits my nuetral foot position. The shoe is very comfortable right out of the box. Another reviewer noted that the toe area is not very "tall". I agree and personally think this knocks the shoe down a half size. I tried on another montrail trail running shoe in a size 12 before buying this and it had a regular high toebox. I would have been fine with that size in that shoe, however, with this shoe I needed to go to a 12.5 and it fits really well. I can't say anything about durability yet, but I'm not expecting this one to last forever because it is light and the rubber on the sole seems grippy and soft. I liked that Amazon sells half sizes in big sizes. I also like that montrail makes these in some "normal" colors. All the trail shoes these days look like they were designed by people painting bass lures and designing clothes for a Cyndi Lauper video. Thank you Montrail for providing some normal colors.

I've run a few 50ks, 3 - 50 milers, 1 - 100 miler, and 16 (I think) road and trail marathons and I have done them in all kinds of shoes. So I have no allegiances to any shoe brands. I went to Roadrunner to try out some newer trail shoes to replace my trusty NB100s that have served me well over the years. What I liked about the NB100 was the light weight and low profile soles. It's very minimalist and I liked that. But it was a bit narrow and sometimes it would chafe in the back.

I tried the montrail in the store and liked that it was lightweight and had a pretty neutral sole with good padding. I always wear a size 11 so that's what I got and it felt ok in the store. Fast forward to my first run on trail. BAD. It was too small and my big toe got jammed pretty good. Roadrunner was good about exchanging it to a bigger size and I got 11.5. I tried running in it and it was much better but I found that the uppers were too squishy and my forefoot tended to slide side to side a bit more than I liked. I tried to tie the laces really tight but it didn't help enough. Also, the NB100 had a hard plastic plate that ran through the bottom sole that protected the feet well. The Montrail Rogue has a thicker foam sole but it didn't have a similar hard plate so some of the sharper points tended to put a pressure point on your feet.

All in all, I haven't done more than 10 miles at a time in them so I'm not sure if the softer foam will pay off on longer runs or not. I have a 50k race next weekend so I will find out how they perform and report back.

This review comes after my third purchase of this model. These are extremely light shoes, offering the minimal support you need for outdoor adventure. I go on long 10+ mile per day hikes, and even with a loaded backpack I still love their minimalism. I've never had ankle problems, so I'll gladly take a swift shoe over a heavy hiking boot. I also run on pavement and these are good for that too. Eventually the grip pattern of the sole wears down (probably mostly from pavement running), but I tend to get a good year or more from a pair.

Montrail comes out with a welcome addition to their lineup with a very light, proper feeling shoe that comes tantalizingly close to really delivering the goods. The fit is quite good and the well designed mini lugs that make a bigger lug outsole seems quite grippy in all but the slimeiest and muddiest of conditions (but what does really work in the slop?) The only problem with the shoe is that there is a gap of protection in both rubber outsole and tread lug components directly under the third metatarsal head which if you are a mid to forefoot efficient runner is precisely where you need the protection for long days out amongst the rocks and the roots. Looking forward to next year's edition already!

These are the best shoes for trail running, or even hiking. They have great grip on loose dirt. I like them so much that I wear for workouts, and even just our running errands. I will purchase these shoes many times again.

I really loved running trails in these. They were the shoe I pulled out when I felt like a bit of comfort. Unfortunately they just didn't last. Maybe I'm a bit rough on my shoes but I would have expected to get better miles than I did. I have other trail shoes with 500kms and they are still going strong.
At around 160kms (100 miles) the soles were worn down and at 200kms (125miles) they peeled away.
Having said that I just bought another pair. There are days I just want run in these.
