Paul Weston was an ace arranger and songwriter, his biggest hit being the first (pre-Godspell) "Day by Day."
He was Tommy Dorsey's chief arranger from 1936 through 1940; had his own radio program called (I believe) Paul Weston and His Music from Hollywood (a moniker which appeared on several of his albums); scored film soundtracks (including the 1943 COVER GIRL, on the set of which he met, and was befriended by, no less than Jerome Kern); did television scoring as late as the 1970s; crafted the classic Doris Day "bookend" albums DAY BY DAY and DAY BY NIGHT; and was perhaps the first to put out all-instrumental "Easy Listening" albums under his own name (beginning with the Capitol set MUSIC FOR DREAMING, in 1945). He recorded several albums for Columbia and Capitol through 1960. His best known work from this period was the series of pop-singer spoofs he recorded with his wife Jo Stafford, featuring "Jonathan & Darlene Edwards." His scoring and harmonization always project a luminous generosity which lovingly "sets" all those classic melodies like precious jewels - to say nothing of his unobtrusive wit. (Throughout the 24 tracks of MOOD FOR 12 and SOLO MOOD, a similar chromatic intro can be heard on 4 different tracks. And on his Capitol album FLOATIN' LIKE A FEATHER, the "Pop Goes the Weasel" quotes - in the first and last tracks - are hardly less puckish than Horace Silver's similar jest on the Miles Davis Blue Note version of "Well You Needn't.

This CD gives us a lovely collection of easy listening music by the great Paul Weston orchestra. The collection is made up of standards, like `My funny valentine', `Dancing on the ceiling', `Memories of you', `Body and soul', `Autumn in New York', and lots more mixed in with more rarely heard tunes, like `Emaline', `Judy', `Louisiana' and a few others. The distinctive feature of the 24 tracks here is that there is a soloist featured on every tune: Bill Schaefer on trombone for `I'm comin' Virginia', Babe Russin on tenor sax for `It's the talk of the town', Paul Smith on piano for `Nice work if you can get it', and lots more. I don't know any other Cd of dance band music that features a selection of different soloists on every track. If you like the music of the 1930s to 1950s played in a relaxed way, this is a great CD.

I originaly purchased Solo Mood in 45RPM format in 1955. I have enjoyed the Soft Jazz and interpretive improvisations of the Soloists and the Orchestra which follow the line and tune of the orginal music. It is a most enjoyable set of Music. The 12 tunes in front of Solo Mood are just as great and Paul Weston is a Class A arranger.

This was the first record I ever bought (in the late fifties)and was happy to buy the CD because I have worn out the record. The CD sounds even better. In over forty years of listening I still rate this recording as one of my favorites.
