This is "Classic" stuff. The two vocal pieces are precious. A very smooth, joyful CD, right on the money. I was into "Moody's Mood For Love" 36 years ago and Im wonder'n how I could have forgotten it for so many years. Thank You James where ever you are.

A few years after Moody got famous by playing his solo on "I'm In the Mood for Love," we find the soxophonist playing his own brand of bebop and hard bop both on the sax and on the flute. He picked up the flute after being encouraged from some flautist friends, including Yusef Lateef. To this day, Moody still does not consider himself a flute player - he thinks of himself as a "flute holder."
Moody's Mood For Love is a fine album with a good collection of tempos and instruments. Moody sounds equally fluent on both the tenor sax and the flute. Vocalist Eddie Jefferson appears on a couple of tracks, once to sing the famous "Moody's Mood" in his own peculiar style. A solid addition to your collection.

I stumbled onto this CD while browsing one day at an OLD record shop in downtown Seattle. They wanted $3 for it! I'd heard my father speak of this man's skill, but had never experienced it for myself, and at $3.....I couldn't miss! Took the CD to the car, and by the 16th measure of the FIRST song, I was hooked! When that flute kicks in on FOOLIN' THE BLUES.....you're done! If you can STILL get this CD, at ANY price...do so! Now, I need to get BACK to that record store, maybe they have a Miles Davis CD laying around for $4.50! LOL.... Pure Jazz greatness!

I'll confess to not having many of Moody's albums, but this one inspired me to change that. A quick run through the sound samples on this page should reveal why.

While the sound samples will give a hint about the music, it's only after you listen to the entire album that you realize this is like two mini albums because the ensembles that each produced half of the tracks are vastly different. Fortunately, the sequence of the two recording dates are interleaved so there are no abrupt shifts in mood [no pun intended] or orchestration.

One of the key differences between the two sessions is the use of more lower register instruments, and in particular a trombone and baritone sax. The bottom end of those tracks are a marked contrast to the others, but the track sequence makes it all sound natural.

The first two and last two tracks were recorded in Chicago during the second recording session that took place on January 13, 1957. The personnel on this session are John Coles on trumpet, Jimmy Boyd on alto horn on Foolin' The Blues and piano on Plus Eight, Stardust and Mean to Me (tenor saxophonist Benny Golson is on piano on Mean to Me), Moody is on tenor sax and flute, John Latham on bass and Clarence Johnston on drums.

Tracks 3 through 6 were recorded during the first session on December 14, 1956. This line-up features Eddie Jefferson's vocals on I'm in the Mood for Love, and a front line comprised of John Coles on trumpet, Donald Cole on trombone, Moody on tenor sax and flute and Tate Houston on baritone sax. The rhythm section for this session consisted of Jimmy Boyd on piano, John Latham on bass and Clarence Johnston on drums.

This was one of my father's favorite jazz albums. I used to listen to it as a child, and I loved it then. James Moody and the accompanying musicians are phenomenal. If you like old school jazz--the really good stuff--then this album is for you. Be prepared--Mr. Moody's version of Hoagy Carmichael's "Stardust" will knock you off your feet. This is the good stuff!
