Heartwarming Story of Faith in Difficult Times

Rachel Beckwith cares for her disabled husband, but has a harder and harder time with the simple tasks of life. She becomes more reclusive with every passing day, afraid to venture outside for fear of becoming lost.

Her husband, Pete, blames Rachel for his condition. Bitterness and resentment mark his every interaction with her. He can't understand why she's become so inept at keeping house or taking care of him.

Author Kathi Macias does a masterful job at portraying this family and the challenges they go through dealing with Alzheimer's Disease. Her tender treatment of the relationship dynamics and the hope infused through faith in the Lord and the support of community make this especially heartwarming.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. Alzheimer's and dementia are a growing problem in this country as the population ages. The story promotes both understanding and encouragement for those who act as caregivers.

I bought this book as soon as it was available because I enjoy the stories author Kathi Macias writes. She writes from the heart about the experiences of life and the fullness of its realities. Sometimes her work hits close to home and this is one of those times. A dear friend went through some of what the characters of To the Moon and Back did, and this novel opened me to a deeper understanding of Alzheimer’s.
Drawn into a family’s story of learning to live with both sad and happy changes, the book was well done with varied points of view. I saw through the eyes and walked in the shoes of an older couple and their grown daughter. I watched faith at every level change, strengthen, falter and hold strong. I listened to conversations and prayers, and felt their tears as well as their joy and was uplifted. “. . . no matter how small, a victory.” I highly recommend taking the time to read To the Moon and Back.

We experience Alzheimer's through the eyes of Rachel, a sixty-seven-year-old wife and mother who forgets that her daughter Lilly is no longer in college and that her husband Pete was injured in a car accident. Rachel keeps herself from sliding into an abyss of confusion by "doing the next thing," something she learned from her mother. We also see through the eyes of Lilly, whose faith has slipped, and Pete, who has become embittered by life circumstances. When Lilly returns home to help care for her parents, we have ringside seats to how grace can change a family.
