Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–4—Gibbons knows her stuff when it comes to children's nonfiction. The crisp and informative text is nicely narrated by Chris Lutkin, with gentle background music and occasional sound effects. Listeners will learn about ancient beliefs regarding the moon, the moon's probable origin, its effect on the tides, the various lunar phases, and the history of lunar exploration. Readers will want to have the book in hand for illustrations that expand and explain some of the text. VERDICT This is a winning audiobook and would be a good resource for listening centers for those doing astronomy units. ["Wide in scope and visually appealing, this book will serve pleasure and purposeful readers equally well": SLJ 4/97 review of the Holiday House book.]—Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

From Booklist

Gr. 2^-4, younger for reading aloud. This fully illustrated introductory book offers young children information about the moon: its orbit and phases, its place in solar and lunar eclipses, its effect on Earth's oceans, moon exploration, and the legends the moon has inspired in various cultures. Written clearly yet without too much detail, the text moves along quickly. The pictures and diagrams deserve study, as they help readers visualize such concepts as how the moon moves in relation to the earth and the sun and why it seems to change shape. Gibbons uses a spacious format to vary page layout, presenting each facet of the moon's story with a large illustration or a series of smaller ones. Her colorful pictures of people observing the moon seem all the more brilliant against backgrounds of midnight blue. A fine resource for school and public library collections. Carolyn Phelan --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This book is another Gail Gibbons classic. If your child loves things like astronomy (or you want to introduce the Moon to them), this book is for you! My son is 3 and it is able to keep his mind active and engaged but could certainly be enjoyed by children up to 7 or 8 years old. This is done by the author in her classic style (the way I love) of giving great information in a FUN, SIMPLE, and EASY to read way! I would say this would be a great book to introduce in a classroom for teachers K-2 teaching on the subject as well. A WONDERFUL Gail Gibbons option, especially when you can get it on Amazon for a fraction of the price...I paid $5 including shipping!!

This is a great book for teaching children about the moon phases. The illustrations are great and the text is not boring. I would recommend this book to teachers, parents, or anyone who has trouble learning the moon phases.

I got this book to go with the Uncle Milton Moon in My Room, and I'm glad I did. The moon toy is a light-up moon that hangs on the wall and lights up with a remote control. I use this book as a bedtime storybook along with the 'moon' on the wall, to teach my grandson about phases of the moon, tides, satellites, and the solar system, eclipses and other stuff. We also read the book when we look at the real moon through our telescope. It's easy to understand, visually appealing, and interesting.

MY 5 AND 3 YEAR OLDS ARE TELLING ME WHAT PHASE THE MOON IS IN. Correctly, I might add. I bought it to accompany the Moon in my Room toy and we don't have the toy up yet but they have te moon to look at every night so it's been a great educational enterainment for my outdoorsy book loving boys!

This was a very interesting book and great for explaining the moon. My daughter is only two but she liked having the book read to her and she is fascinated by the moon so this was a great purchase.

This is a wonderful book to use when teaching the phases of the moon. My third grade students really enjoyed it. I first read the whole book aloud, then I broke it into different sections as we learned about the moon.
I also recommend it if you are teaching your students about informational texts. This is just one great example of how an author can present information in different ways.

Very sweet book for a child older than 2. The book itself is paper like and is easily ripped. It is a rather large book with a very good story and lots of colorful pictures. It is great for story time.
