About the Author

Neil Perry Gordon achieved his goal of an author of historical fiction with his first novel - A Cobbler's Tale, published in the fall of 2018. With dozens of reviews praising his writing style, he released his second novel - Moon Flower the following year.

His creative methods and inspiration has been described as organic, meaning that he works with a general premise for his characters and plot, without a formal, detailed outline. This encourages his writing to offer surprising twists and unexpected outcomes, which readers have celebrated.

These two novels also have the attributes of being driven by an equal balance between character development and action scenes, which moves the stories along at a page-turning pace.

Due for release in the summer of 2019, is Neil's sequel to A Cobbler's Tale. The Righteous One is a spiritual adventure story of Moshe the Cobbler, a gentle sixty-year old tzaddik who is called upon to awaken his divine connection to the Almighty in order to destroy the gangster and rasha - Solomon Blass who invokes Kabbalah's dark side to wield his nefarious powers.

Moshe learns that the final battle must take place in the dream world where the rasha moves about freely, but where the tzaddik must first receive training from ancient mystical forces in order to eliminate the evil force.

The author has attributed his love for the creative process from his education from his formative years spent learning to learn at the Green Meadow Waldorf School.

Couldn’t put this one down. If you like historical fiction with plenty of twists and turns and a sprinkling of fantasy this book is a must read. It’s a sweeping tale of one young mans life journey both physical and spiritual and all he encounters along the way.

The author skillfully weaves the plights of native Americans, Jewish immigrants and the earliest European settlers to the New World as their paths intersect.

I particularly enjoyed the way the author takes us inside the lives of various Native American tribes and offers parallels that this reader had never before considered

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I love historical novels and I love Native American spirituality, and expected to love this book. Unfortunately, I found the story shallow, and convoluted. It should have been kept simple, sticking more to the main story line, and development of characters. I did enjoy the historical descriptions of NYC, the English and the Dutch. The spiritual lessons are good, but common to most. Still they do need to be constantly repeated in different forms to grab our attention, so that was fine. But the whole story, (and I think it could have been a good one), just never grabbed me. Hastily written I suspect. Native Americans as The Lost Tribes of Israel, and the slave trade, needed to be better developed in a lengthened novel, or perhaps a separate one.

This 16th Century story tells the fascinating tale of how Lukas reaches out to the wisdom of the Native American tribes who are also fighting for their very existence against the encroaching white man.

A fine second novel - deserving of 5 stars.

Great “New World” story...start to finish!

Wow! What a beautifully crafted, engrossing and thought provoking story. The characters really showed me a great view of the how Old World America and New World America blended together and how many valuable teachings the Native Americans had to share. Meaningful topics of good vs. evil and coming of age in the 1600’s was thought provoking and kept my interest from start to finish.

Moon Flower is the second book from author Neil Perry, and like the first book, A Cobbler’s Tale, this book brings historical fiction to technicolor life. Here’s what I said in my review of the first book, and I can say the same thing about Moon Flower, “the author is a born storyteller and readers will be captivated by all the colorful characters and the dangers, schemes and plots that abound.”

Moon Flower is a completely separate story, although as you read it, you will notice common themes. Moon Flower begins with the main character Lukas Pietersen introducing himself to us as an 18 year old living in New Amsterdam in the year 1675. Lukas is the son of Dutch Jews who have a business trading with the natives for beaver pelts. Lukas’ life takes a different turn, “I left home in late June of 1675 to become a warrior of the Pequawket Turtle Clan.” Becoming a warrior proves to be mystical and life changing for Lukas. “A warrior’s life is one of intent and purpose. A warrior acts out of love for others.”

With his superb story telling skills, the author takes warrior Lukas though many amazing adventures in the American colonies, as well as In Amsterdam and Africa. Lukas becomes a warrior for justice and human rights. “You are fighting an evil, men who do not honor the Great Spirit.” “The plight of the Jews was much like that of the native peoples I lived with.”

This book is packed with action and adventure and again shows us the meaningful word pictures that Author Gordon creates so well. This book will appeal to many readers-those who like to learn about different cultures and beliefs, and those who like vivid characters, action and adventure. I especially encourage YA readers to give this book a try. Thanks to the author for a review copy. This is my honest review.

An engaging read

I'm a fan of colonial American historical fiction. For the most part, the author didn't disappoint. After a slow start, too dependent on a narrative backstory, the plot really gets going once Lukas leaves his mother to live among the natives. The author's descriptive abilities helped me easily envision the various characters, settings, and interactions Lukas encounters. There are various twists in the plot that, honestly, could have been the embryo for future novels. Nonetheless, I found the detours interesting. However, the author needs to address his sequencing of setting. Towards the end, he referenced the death of Lukas's mother (1689)...when Lukas would have been 32 years old. Shortly after this, Lukas mentions he'd left on his spirit quest four years earlier, and Capt. Lovewell killed his father eight years prior. Neither time reference makes sense since Lukas left his mother in 1675, and he'd been a young boy when his father died. Furthermore, traveling to the Piscataque River (established as being close to New York) would have been much more than two days by foot from the White Mountains (in New Hampshire). Nit-picky? Perhaps, but certain elements within historical fiction should remain consistent. Knowledge of geography and passage of time are two of those, imo.
