Editorial Reviews
Review
"Daniel... is a winning mixture of curiosity, hesitancy, and gumption."―Sarah Weinman, New York Times Book Review
Praise for More Better Deals
"When funky books need to be written, Joe R. Lansdale writes them. . . . The plot is pure James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice, but steeped in hillbilly noir."―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review
"The prolific Mr. Lansdale…draws on the spirit and themes of James M. Cain in this stand-alone book, which works clever variations on such Cain classics as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity.
―Tom Nolan, Wall Street Journal
"Lansdale really makes this used car purr."―Booklist (starred review)
"Highly enjoyable . . . Populated with an admirable array of laughable miscreants, this droll, savage novel is vintage Lansdale. The author's storytelling powers remain as strong as ever."―Publishers Weekly
" [A] down-and-dirty riff on Double Indemnity, a provocative new variation on James M. Cain’s noir classic...an enjoyably cynical cruise down the back roads to perdition."―Lisa Henricksson, Airmail
"He's genre dextrous, moving fleetly between westerns, mysteries, thrillers, horror, sci-fi, literary fiction, and nonfiction, and doing it all extremely well."―Publishers Weekly
"Southern crime legend Joe Lansdale channels his best James M. Cain world vision...Readers can expect to be transported in the usual Lansdale fashion, as nobody does those East Texas period details quite like Lansdale, who always delivers with a finely-crafted, engaging, compulsive crime story in his home terrain."―Dwyer Murphy, CrimeReads

The fictional town of Long Lincoln in the late '60's has Moon Lake and more secrets than a porcupine has quills. No one is who you think they are, the mystery and misdirection abounds.
The main character, Daniel Russell, has been dealt a losing hand at a very young age. His fascination with Moon Lake and the secrets buried there disrupts the entire community. There are what appear to be ritualistic and pattern murders. Daniel investigates and uncovers clues linking his own father to the grisly crimes.
This story was atmospheric with quirky characters.
The racial tensions of the south during this era were quite accurately portrayed. One of the best books I've read this year. This is an author I would definitely read again and recommend.
I could almost say the story lulls you in but I believe it’s more than that. I felt like I was part of the story. To me, that’s a sign of a great storyteller. The story was easy to follow, easy to read, and there wasn’t an over abundance of words describing every little detail. There was no fluff. I’ve read the reviews about the overuse of similes, but the similes never bothered me or interrupted the reading.
Daniel was a very sympathetic character, who by the end of the story, didn’t actually get everything he wanted. I actually enjoyed that approach. We don’t get everything we want in life and Daniel found that out.
I did want to know Ronnie a little more. I found myself intrigued by her character and wanted to find out more of what was in her head. I believe I loved the characters I was suppose to love and loathed those I was suppose to loathe. Im still not sure I really trust Buck 100%.
The book is definitely worth a read and happy to say it’s got me back reading again. Well done.
And, what reader cannot be drawn in when they read these words? “My name is Daniel Russell. And I dream of dark water."
I suggest for maximum enjoyment reading only through about chapter 13, where the only good mystery hits its peak, and then jumping all the way to the last page where it gets resolved almost as an afterthought.
I'd love to give some examples of the nonsense but that would be spoilers.

As a storyteller, Lansdale is kind of like being told a wild story from an old friend, perhaps while you are sitting together in an all-night diner. He tells the kind of stories where you ask for two or three refills on your coffee, even if you have to get up early for work the next morning. Lansdale's a seasoned storyteller and you're in good hands with pretty much any of his stories.
I don't want to give away too many of Moon Lake's plot points as that would ruin the fun, but let's just say the novel begins with the sad legacy of a town flooded underwater and a body in the trunk of a car. As the lake begins to dry out, evil will see the light of day.
Sit back, order that refill on your coffee, it's going to be a long night.
Taut dialogue and tangible characters make this a wholly satisfying read. Much as I enjoyed More better deals, Moon Lake is a solid step up.
