The book itself is well written. I liked the characters. Sex scenes were not extremely detailed, but kind enough to the reader for some hot flashes. It was sweet to see the heroine grow up. Now to be honest, this is the first book of hers I have read and really reads like a series with cliffhangers. Loose ends abound. The bad guy is not caught even in the epilogue . For my tastes, I prefer a more tightly woven book. I do not enjoy cliffhangers. It seems so unfinished to me. I am fine with introducing the next book characters, but this was too much. That being said, I read the book in a day, so the author moved me along and kept my attention. I needed more from the book to feel satisfied in giving it more stars. To give you a clue to what keeps my attention, Lilliana Heart and Nicky Charles.

In 1870, eight-year-old Abigail Hunter feels her life is over as they bury her mother who apparently killed by her father and is incarcerated for murder. Her three older brothers try to help her cope, but the tragedy seem too much for them as it is for her. One by-product of no longer having a mom is Abby was raised as a rancher on the Hill Country, Texas Half-Moon Ranch rather than as a lady.
Ten years later, Abby still struggles with the pivotal tragedies as her father is released from prison. When she meets Major Jonah Tremain when he seeks a horse tamer, she falls in love. However, he wants a real lady as a wife and not a tomboy who happens to be the trainer of the horses he needs. Jonah never reckoned with a Texas tornado like Abby who goes after him with a vengeance.
The key to MOON RACER, book three of the Half-Moon Ranch romances (see HUNTER'S MOON by Bobbi Smith and RENEGADE MOON by Elaine Barbieri) is Constance O'Banyon's skill to further the mystery of ten years ago without giving away the secret. The lead couple is a solid pair as Abby goes out of her way to prove to the obstinate cavalry officer that it is not petticoats it is the heart. The strong story line adds depth to the Hunters while entertaining readers with a fine Texas romance. Anyone who reads this novel and its predecessors (sequential order is the best approach, but each tale can stand-alone) will die waiting for the finale DARK MOON by Evelyn Rogers to learn what really happened a decade ago).

A wonderful combination of romance, light humor, and mystery. Abby Hunter is a loner who has grown up in a small town with the stigma of her father murdering her mother. She is also a determined woman who developed her skills and talents working on her family's horse ranch, as well as surviving in the Western frontier. Jonah Tremain is a successful cavalry officer who heralds from an old and respected military family steeped in tradition. He has resentfully followed the path his father, a retired general, has dictated for his life and career including the selection of his future bride. Jonah is affianced to a beautiful socialite who is suitable for an officer rising in the ranks. Jonah is investigating the robbery of the military payroll when his path collides with Abby. He discovers the depth of the many layers of Abby's fascinating character and her zest for life. He soon realizes how empty and rote his life has been to this point. Now he must deal with the dilemma of his adhering to his principles of honor and integrity and his love and passion for Abby. He must choose between honoring his promise to wed his high society fiance and the life chosen for him or seeking an alternate path with Abby and the fulfillment of his dreams.
"Moon Racer" is book #3 in "Half Moon Ranch" series. Each book in the series is written by a different author. If you are interested in reading more in the series check the following:
Book #1 - Hunter's Moon by Bobbi Smith
Book #2 - Renegade Moon by Elaine Barbieri
Book #3 - Moon Racer by Constance O'Banyon
Book #4 - Dark of the Moon by Evelyn Rogers

If you read other Amazon Reviews is sounds like "Moon Racer" was the best in the series.

Constance O'Banyon never fails to amaze me. She just keeps getting better and better. Abby and Jonah's story is a strong one, well plotted and well written. I always feel like I am there with them. Jonah is a Major who has trouble of his own, but he has even more when spunky Abby gets tangled in his life. I did not want this book to end. I would like to see a second book on Abby and Jonah. Is that possible, Mrs. O'Banyon?
I loved it, loved it!

This is a historical romance with an emphasis on interpersonal relationships and a slow pace. Nothing memorable but a good read for $1. She turns from tomboy into a lady; the villain is stereotypically nasty; and the fiancé is a nice lady whose feelings don't get hurt--she is really just there really to build tension between him and her. Forgettable book but 4-star if you like the genre. I guess I don't anymore.

It's a good thing Patricia shoved Abby and Jonah together before they each blew their one chance for a happily ever after. Some people can be so stubborn when they believe they know what's best or right for everyone else. Loved the description of the horses and especially the "taming" Abby did on the rather spirited horse no one else wanted to tame.
