I've tested it on distilled acid vinegar and it accurately measured a pH of 3. I added some baking soda solution with a known mass to vinegar with a known mass and the meter accurately reflected the pH value of the reaction. I made a solution of NaCL (table salt, has a pH of 7.0) and water and it showed a stronger pH as I've added more salt - reflecting the battery construction and voltage measurements.
Overall, I'm impressed with the tool for the price.
The only reason it's not five stars is that it would be nice to have a "freeze" button, so that you can pull it out of the ground and read it. Unless your plants are all at eye level, it's sort of a pain. Finer gradation on the Ph scale would have been nice, too.
So I tried that. I put the meter in the soil for a long time. The meter actually moved, though not nearly as much as I had hoped. So my soil IS pretty alkaine after all. More of a bummer than a broken meter. I think I'm gonna need some nitrogen.
My point is, you have to leave this thing in for awhile. Don't expect to put it in the soil and get an immediate reading like I did. Be patient. Give it some time. And try not to forget it by leaving it in the soil too long, or you'll end up leaving it out in the rain, like I did.
- Nice to have three different meters in one device
- Easy to use once you know how
- No instructions included
- Takes a long time to get a reading
It's good to have a meter for your garden. Is this the holy grail of meters? Probably not, but it's an adequate device while I'm still hunting.
I used when amending the soil in my garden. It gave me a general idea of pH, and seemed to work as my plants grew wonderfully. I used this indicator before and after application of lime, and it recognized the increase very well. I recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to buy an expensive pH measuring setup.
I also tested the moisture meter on dry soil, moist soil, wet soil, and pure water. Each time the indication on the meter was good. The last picture shows the moisture level when dipped in pure water.
I don't need to check the light levels, so didn't do detailed testing there. But, the needle does move towards "light" when a flashlight is pointed to the light sensor.
