From the Back Cover
Jane Eyre meets Supernatural.
Alexia's nightmares become reality: a dead baron, red-eyed wraiths, and forbidden love with a man hunted by these creatures. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with her beloved and risk becoming one of the Soulless.
Though set in the 1700s, lots of women will relate to the heroine of Moonless (Raybourne Publishing 2014), Alexa. Considered unattractive by her parents, she is worried about being snubbed by her peers when she finally is presented as an adult to the elite, privileged, pampered, noble society in which she was raised. What ugly duckling girl with legs too skinny and chest too flat can't relate to Alexa's worries. But overnight, something happens and Alexia becomes the image of beauty, envied by women and sought by men. As she comes to terms with her new appearance, she meets a blue-eyed stranger who seems to understand her better than most of the boys in her peer group. She falls hard for him, but he disappears. When she tries to find him, she ends up in a world she doesn't understand with beings that don't make sense. It becomes evident that what she has become is both frightening and exciting--and the only world where she can be with this man she can't forget.
Collier creates an intricate and fascinating supernatural world, one with plenty of surprises that kept me turning the pages. I thoroughly enjoyed joining Alexia as she struggled to understand her new world.
By the way: The tag line reads, "Jane Eyre meets supernatural". Most of the time, I'm underwhelmed when books compare themselves to classics. This time, it was spot on.
Have you ever had nightmares that terrified you? Have you ever looked in a mirror and thought the reflection you saw was someone else because you’re not beautiful like the image staring back at you? In Author Crystal Collier’s fantasy novel MOONLESS (MAIDEN OF TIME BOOK 1) we meet sixteen-year-old Alexia Dumont, who has nightmares. For Alexia, they started when she turned sixteen, and, unlike the dreams most of us have, that go away when we wake up, Alexia’s dreams come true.
The author has written a story about family, secrets, love, and danger. She has created a fantasy world with characters known as the “Passionate” and the “Soulless” to name a few. As Alexia, little by little, discovers the truth about her mother and father, as well as about Arik, the man she loves, she’s faced with choices that will determine not only her future but the lives of others as well.
I really like Alexia. She’s brave and bold at times. She’s also human, well sort of, enough to make mistakes. If you enjoy characters that keep you guessing what they’ll do next and a story with a touch of mystery and a little romance, then pick up a copy of MOONLESS (MAIDEN OF TIME BOOK 1). See if you can solve all the mysteries before the end. Things did not always turn out the way I expected them to. How about you?
The year is 1768. Sixteen-year-old Alexia is supposed to marry, as any proper young woman of her time is expected to do. Trouble is, she's rather unattractive - until one mysterious night, when she undergoes a physical transformation and becomes an amazingly beautiful woman. It is then that she meets an unusual cast of characters: evil child, Belleza, and the incredibly handsome, blue-eyed Kiran. As it turns out, Alexia isn't quite human. As Belleza points out, she's "one of us" - a Passionate. And she's being chased by the terrifying crimson-eyed Souless.
Moonless is an intriguing story with some excellent world building. The descriptions are so vivid, it's easy to imagine Alexia world. Throughout the book, there is an undercurrent of danger, compelling the reader to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. The characters are also well-developed. Alexia is a likeable heroine, Kiran a passionate lover, and Belleza a horrifying imp.
Moonless is a story that would appeal to readers who enjoy fantasies and paranormal romance.
Woah. I am loving this book and the world within it. Alexia was one thing and now that she met the blue eyed guy, her world is about to get shocked. Alexia went from this okay girl to an overnight beauty. Think that's crazy? Well you know how moonlight walks are supposed to be romantic? Not in this book. Walking at moonlight is not safe, mostly due to another world that exists among humans.
So what's going on here. Well Alexia's world is about the women being married off. Not just that, but they make sure the other family will benefit them in some way. So in that aspect its pretty much what you would expect during this time period. Though Alexia is lucky when it comes to her family. She isn't held to super outrageous standards that a family would expect. Her family is slightly crazy, but still holds certain standards. Either way, its not too bad for Alexia and I'm very glad I wasn't living during that period. I don't like the whole family marrying off a person to another family. It just never seemed right to me, I like the whole idea of dating and finding that one person you are meant for on your own.
Anyway lets talk Kiren. Mr lovely blue eyes that make you swoon. Yes, he is another character that I will be addicted to and just need to have my dose of Kiren.
So in this world the people are called Passionate. Which Alexia will become. She will become a strong character in no time and have a pretty serious role in this new world. She will make sure the soulless will never get a chance to grab a victim.
At first I wasn't super sure about Alexia, but as she grew strong and I got to know her more, she quickly grew on me. As you read along, you get more ideas of Alexia from other characters by what they think of her. You will also be introduced to other characters. The other characters I did like, I didn't have any real issues with them.
The book itself I really enjoyed. I did have slight issues with certain chapters. There was about two chapters that I wasn't happy with, mainly because the book was really good then it would hit this chapter that slowed things down, when I just wanted it to keep on moving. But that may also be because I was into the book and just wanted things to keep on going.
Overall I wouldn't put the book down and wished I had the next book already to dive into! This book is so worth the read. Either if you love this genre or want something different to read.
