I chose to review the Comfort U Pillow here because reviews are more visible here and also primarily because I saw some argument about whether this is a "solid U" pillow or "3 separate pillows with fabric connecting them". It IS a solid "U pillow". According to the main website, the U-Shaped Complete Pillow is the most popular model and is the only one being sold *now*. And that is the pillow I received. A complete "U" just to clarify things. It comes with ONE pillow case that is also white with a full zipper, so there's really no need to purchase more unless you care about the color a lot. The one that comes with it is perfectly fine with dual-zippers and is thick and durable. I washed and dried it right away and put it on. Although it's not nearly as soft as I'd like, the instructions do indicate that it will "soften up" after several washings (but that's true of everything you wash, so I feel like for the price they could include a softer case because the one included isn't soft at all). But it IS durable and easy to zip onto the weird "U" shape.
Customer Service through the website I mentioned was excellent. I asked a few questions about whether the pillow was "solid" or split and got fast answers. After ordering, they sent me several automated messages regarding how to fluff/care for the pillow (after unpacking since it's compressed) and follow up care. I also received many emails regarding links to "how to use" and ideas on what conditions and positions can be useful. It was all very helpful and when I DID choose to reply to what seemed like automated e-mails, I got a live person's response within less than 12 hours each and every time.
So if you're ordering this in 2017, you are getting a "FULL U Pillow" and not the pieces that older reviews here suggest. They've abandoned that design in favor of the full U. That being clarified....the pillow really isn't nearly as "large" and obtrusive for couples as some suggest. I suppose it depends on what you're used to and your bed size, but if you've been using a standard body-pillow for maternity, back pain, or just side-sleeping, this really isn't any larger in terms of width. My significant other and I have a Queen Sized bed that is against the wall (which reduces space to some degree) and he is a large dude over 6'2 that is a "wild sleeper" and I'm an insomniac with extreme Sciatica with a torn Rotator Cuff *Shoulder* and Sleep Apnea. I don't move a lot, but I wake up VERY easily and need all different head and body pillows just to avoid pain from laying down straight on my back (and our mattress is less than 1 year old and good quality).
The first thing I did with this was put the pillow in the dryer to "fluff" it as directed and I bleached and washed/dried the case and put it on. Then I shaped it into the "nest" shape (criss-cross the bottom ends and essentially have your feet slightly propped and your body/butt inside the nest for back-sleeping. This was heavenly. Then I tried side-sleeping. It was weird the first night because I was so used to grabbing a normal pillow to move/re-fluff/stuff where the pain was that I kept doing the motions....but the offending "pillow" wasn't there. So that was different and nice at the same time.
This pillow is neither too full nor too soft. It functions like a down pillow in that it forms to however you're laying and will stay "flat" or indented in those areas until you do a little shaking and fluffing. Then it's back to "full poof" with little effort and you can re-shape as needed. If you have used a real down pillow, you know what I mean. If you have not....this means that no matter how much you flatten this pillow, it will re-fluff and re-shape as soon as you give it a shake or a few slaps. Down is very easy to "form" to your position, but also stays formed that way until you REFORM it. This is a down-alternative that *from my experience thus far* functions exactly like a real feather down pillow and responds to the same treatment as down. But without the feathers flying and the potential sneezes.
I'm using this primarily for my severe back injuries and pain that keeps me awake at night as well as keeping my neck/spine aligned because of mild sleep apnea. When your neck, back, and lower back are aligned laying on your side....all of those pains and issues are reduced. For sleep apnea, you can "form" and lean back or up on the curve of this pillow to ensure breathing passages are open. That's why I did the "nest" style first. Because I fall asleep primarily on my back. I spend about half of the night on my left side and the rest on my back. Since I have both upper back and Sciatica pain, I MUST use a pillow between my legs to sleep on my side. This is neither too thick nor too thin. It forms well and at 5'7 it easily covers the areas that matter in length (ie: the separation between your knees up to your shoulders and neck). For back sleeping, the nest is best for my back pain and apnea because it slightly lifts my legs/feet as well as my head, but keeps my butt/back/body nestled inside of the "O" shape you're forming.
The best part about this pillow is that a big part of what contributes to my insomnia and restlessness is the need to grab, add, remove, and reposition numerous pillows to try to create the proper leg-gap, head level, and back comfort. With this....it's already there. No matter which way you turn....the pillow is there. You don't have to wake up and grab your #1, 2, or 3 pillows and get them adjusted (making you fully awake and interrupting sleep) just to turn over. You just move and maybe pat with your hands and fall back into sleep.
I thought I'd absolutely need my normal head-pillow with this. It's a down pillow with a silk cover that I'm VERY attached to for forming and molding to help my back and neck. I used it on top of the U-Pillow for about 1 hour before I realized I was screwing up the "alignment" of the U-Pillow regarding my body/spine/neck. So I flung that off the bed as well as my usual body pillow and stayed determined to use JUST this pillow for one total night and see what happened. Not only did my back hurt less....I found I woke up less often (normally I wake every 15 minutes for no reason despite taking Belsomra for insomnia and doing all of the weird things mentioned above). This pillow made me cringe when I paid $109.00 for ONE pillow that isn't even real down and one case that's a bit scratchy.....but I don't feel like I wasted any money after the first night and day. From the time I go to bed until morning I normally utilize up to 4 "normal" bed pillows plus one x-tra large body pillow just to sleep normally on my back and sides. The time I saved NOT waking up and grabbing and discarding and positioning those pillows gave me more sleep. And abandoning my beloved, down main head pillow? I didn't notice any negative difference. This case may not be top notch in softness....but the head "curve" is amazing and so comfortable. I haven't turned onto my right side in over 2 years because of the rotator-cuff injury. Now I can turn to BOTH sides easily and without added pain!! I was so excited.
For those worried about annoying a partner....encourage them to use the side near them for when THEY turn on their side to throw a leg over. And honestly....the mountain of pillows I normally have is gone, so even with this large "U"....I'm taking up LESS space in our Queen Size than I was before because I don't have 4 or 5 pillows flying around the bed like a wall. Upon looking, my significant other was like "OMG that's HUGE"....but when I explained that the other body pillows and extra pillows would be gone, he was like...."OK". He goes to bed before I do since I'm an insomniac and when I slipped into bed with the U-Pillow, he didn't even wake up and didn't seem squished at all. I heard no complaints.
I took photos of how the pillow is positioned for me at bedtime on a Queen Bed on JUST my side, since lots of pictures don't show what it looks like when you need space for another human. This really does leave plenty of space compared to using a body pillow and extras anyway. And it's more streamlined and stays where it belongs, too. I'm very impressed with this pillow so far. The pillow itself is fantastic, comfortable and just the right length, size, and "fluffiness" that is adjustable. The case? Definitely sturdy and has 2 zippers with a perfect fit. But the softness needs major improvement. Something I'm sure U-Pillow could correct easily. But it's not going to stop me from using this and ditching even my most expensive down, memory foam, and body pillows. Because this is all of those and then some! I'm so excited and relieved that I didn't waste money YET AGAIN on a pillow that would just become part of the "nightly rotation" any insomniac or pain-sufferer is familiar with!
And though my son is 13 years old now....Maternity Moms....? Definitely give it a shot. I had no pillows like this back when I was pregnant and I still remember the heinous discomfort even on the softest of mattress. You have nothing to lose on this pillow and I love that I can form it to prop me up using a book, tablet, or even eating a meal if needed because it's so large and versatile. What a fantastic design! Please improve your cases! Softness really matters since we're replacing our old cases with this one against our face and hair! Outside of that....this design is flawless!
1) much longer, with the height listed in the listing. Perhaps they mean unfolded or in the package, because it is certainly not taller than me, and I am 5' tall (It is probably around 48" tall in the U shape)
2) much fluffier - it is not as thick/puffy as I would have hoped, as I need this to put my top leg up onto due to my sciatic pains during pregnancy
I really like that when I turn one way, and then flip to the other side, there is always the pillow already waiting for me there rather than having to flip around another pillow with me. Otherwise, it's fairly useless, as I use my head pillow which I prefer and then put the U part at my feet. Not sure it was worth the expensive price for $100 but too late now.
