Product Description

The Moose is loose and he is riding in a Caboose! Four trains full of happy animals are chugging off on an adventure. The player who collects the most animal cards, by matching colors, wins the game! Players can add a train car to any engine that matches their cards color. The four trains you build upon will grow bigger and bigger during the game. Whenever a Moose Caboose card is placed at the end of a train, you get to collect all of the cards (up to the engine) in that train. The longer the train, the more cards you score.

It's a really fun game, and actually not just for kids. The rules are simple enough to where most any age can play, and the game design is such that adults and kids can all play at the same time.

And this is important, because the way the game works, you really need three to four (or possibly more...) people to play this. Any fewer and you run into some of the limitations. But here, let me start at the beginning.

The idea is that you have "trains" of cards. You set up the playing field with four cards that have train engines on them. Each card has a different color edge to it. Each player has a hand of four cards (also with colored edges) and you match the colors to the cards already in play. You then draw new cards to replace the cards you've played...so if you match two cars, you pick up two more cards.

The strategy part kicks in because there are "caboose" cards. If you play a caboose, you collect all of the cards that were in play in that particular train. And since you are scored based on how many cards you collect, you have to decide if you're going to wait to let a train get really long before playing that caboose, thereby risking another player swooping in ahead of you.

This design really does require three to four players. Any fewer and you tend to have situations where no one can make a color match because of the limited number of cards. You can get around this (kind of) with a house rule that deals 6-8 cards per person instead of 4, but really...the game is more fun with lots of players. More than five might get a little problematic though.

I especially like the colorful art on the cards...it's fun and makes the whole thing look engaging. My entire family enjoyed this game, from age six up to sixty. An excellent family game.

My eldest daughter, age seven, has an old animal matching card game that is so well used and loved that the cards are literally falling apart. On the hunt for a new, simple card game, I had the chance to try out Moose Caboose, and it looked like a worthy successor to the matching game she so often plays. This is a terrific card game that's really simple to figure out and play, so that my eldest can actually play with her little sister as well as her grandparents, who typically don't have the time or patience to figure out complicated rules to play new games.

This is easy enough for the whole family to enjoy, and it's actually engaging in that unique way that a child's card game can be sometimes. It's essentially a color matching game in which you build trains by linking cards together with the same colors on the appropriate sides of the card. And then you have to watch out for the caboose cards and play them at the right time. That's it. One quick read through the enclosed instructions, and you're good to go for one game or a hundred. And like most games, my daughter and her playmates get better and better as they figure out the strategies that make the game last longer and their trains grow longer.

As a parent, I am pleased by the over-sized, colorful, and sturdy game cards. Knowing that when my daughter finds a card game she likes, she'll play it till it falls apart. I suspect that this one will last a long time. Easily recommended for kids and their friends and families to have fun together.

Moose Caboose is a newly designed card game for kids to play with other kids, or with adults. Up to four can play. The cards are colorful, attractive, sturdy, large, and easy to handle. The game is easy to learn and teach because all you have to do is match the colors on the edges of the cards. But there is strategy to be learned, which makes the game fun for kids to play multiple times. The game description on the Amazon page says the trains will "grow and grow," but that's only after the players learn the hard way not to play the caboose at the earliest opportunity: If you try that strategy, you run out of caboose cards that way; and the game ends with a bunch of cards still on the table.

Ever play games like Go Fish or Crazy Eights with your kids? Ever find that they have too many cards in their hands and they can't keep them straight? Well, another great part of this game is that it's designed so that each player will usually have only four cards in their hand at a time--if they can't play a card, then they pass. Although it doesn't work perfectly (what happens if it's two players and neither has a move?), I think it's much better than drawing until you have a move.

To summarize, my kids--both in elementary school--think this game is great and ask to play it with me regularly. And I usually say yes because I like to play it too. So I think that makes this card game a winner.

This is a great family game with a range of ages. We're playing this with a 5 year old, a 6 year old, an eight year old, and a adult. For the first few games the five and six year old were paired with an adult, but now they play by themselves. The five year old isn't as strategic as the eight year old, but we can all play together just fine! In fact the five year old throws in a little bit of randomness to the game that makes it even more interesting!

Basically you make trains by matching the colors on the edges of the card. The longer the train is, the more points it's worth when the caboose gets put on. But anyone with a caboose can finish the train on their turn! The thrill is that someone else can finish the train you want first--only the finisher gets the points. Do you wait till the train is extra long or do you finish it before someone else can?

It only takes about 20 minutes per round. It would be faster if the younger kids didn't have to compare every card every turn (they haven't mastered thinking during everyone else's turn). My younger kids love it, my eight year old has a blast, and I don't mind playing (so far). We're very happy with this game and would defiantly suggest it! It's really nice to have a game that kids can play that isn't matching or old maid!
