Editorial Reviews
Moral Hygiene comes on the heels of Ministry's acclaimed 2018 album AmeriKKKant (hailed by Loudwire as Jourgensen's own "state of the union" address) that was written as a reaction to Donald J. Trump being elected president-though Jourgensen says this new album is more informational and reflective in tone. "With AmeriKKKant I was in shock that Trump won. I didn't know what to do, but I knew I had to do something. Because I believe if you are a musician or an artist you should be expressing what's going on around you through your art. It's going to happen whether you do it consciously or unconsciously. Moral Hygiene however has progressed even further into a cautionary tale of what will happen if we don't act. There's less rage, but there's more reflection and I bring in some guests to help cement that narrative." Limited to 1,600 worldwide

Hard to believe that "The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" was released more than three decades ago (in 1989!), because "Moral Hygiene" sounds like it could very well be a direct follow-up. If you ever had a penchant for the industrial scene, the first track "Alert Level" is sure to get your blood pumping to throw yourself back into the mosh pit. Nearly every track on the album is a contender for my favorite, but if I had to choose one...I think "Believe Me" wins by a nose. I can't get enough of the pulsing energy thrumming through the chorus and elevating keyboard tones, followed by Al tongue-in-cheek grumbling "believe me...believe me..."
At the risk of incurring the wrath of fans and haters of both Linkin Park (in their heyday) and Ministry (who is still going strong), I have to point out that there are some compelling similarities here. For those who miss Chester at his most aggro and socially aware, you might find a kindred spirit in this older (and dare I say wiser -- Al is still going at the age of 64!) sculptor of sound. Where are you hiding that wormhole, Al? The journey continues to be surreal.
Two albums after their alleged last CD, Ministry have mellowed slightly, becoming more like Demon Hunter and less like Cradle of Filth. But completely industrial metal, with harshly shouted vocals in a raspy gravelly tone, backed up with classic death metal guitar chords, electronic backdrop (the harsh variety, of course) and sampled voices. The best is when they clip in two conservative newscasters (one presumes), so that the listener hears “Donald Trump/The enemy of the people”.
Always with an eye on the news, Ministry leans to the left and therefore the humane side of the world of current events - even paying homage to the victims of the pandemic that 45 claimed would magically go away.
The mix of shouted and distorted vocals and the samples are the industrial side of the band, while the chopping guitar chords makes up the metal half: and what a marriage of music they make.
We will admit that they are a acquired taste, as is most industrial (and even death metal, for that matter); but for those indoctrinated in the musical cult, this album will not let you down.

Additionally, Somebody needs to tell the singer, Al. He looks like Johnny Depp. I know I know he had this look before the movies. I know he’s really pierced up and tattooed. Well, so is Jack sparrow. With him it’s all make up piercings and fake tattoos However, those movies have made way way more money than he has. More people know Johnny Depp than this dude. That’s why it’s funny! So somebody should tell him change it up a little. Then in his video he’s waiving around that sword! Too funny!
