I was extremely curious going into this book about how Eric and Silvie's paths would cross, and how their interaction, and relationship would be knowing Eric was attached to someone according to the other series. Their stories are intertwined with precision and creativity. Another fantastic read!
Mordacious starts off with Sylvie in the hospital with her mother, that is in the later stages of death. What I loved about this story was that the author gave Sylvie a connection with the first series - in a round about way in the beginning- by connecting Sylvie and Grace with Maria (Penny and Anna's mother). Then enter Eric - Cassie's brother. I'm so glad this series focuses on NYC because we know in the first book that Eric was trying to get to Cassie, but due to loss of communication devices, we never knew what happened. This book takes you on a ride, but it's so good.
You don't have to read the first series first to begin this book. They each have their own entities, but at some point I do recommend it. The characters are very well written and it's an wonderful adventure of survival as is this one. I patiently await the second book- Peripeteia - but it is going to be a long wait until 2017. Until then, read this series and the other- it's well worth the read!! 5 stars
i really loved mordacious. i wasn't sure at first, to be honest. since it's in first person and i'm familiar with ms. fleming's writing style from the 'until' series, at first i felt like i was listening to cassie, not a new character. as the story progressed, however, sylvie's personality emerged more and more, and i was hooked. she's a great character: complex, messed up, and with a solid core of likeability once you get past the prickles.
spoilers ahead (a few blank lines follow so you don't see them accidentally):
i LOVE that eric is in the story, and that we get his story and point of view. since i just dove in and didn't look at the table of contents, i had no idea. i still haven't check the toc, so who knows, it might have not clued me in anyway. as it stands, eric was a lovely surprise. when i saw the first chapter that said 'Eric' I thought, "Oh! It's Eric! Now I get to know Eric!" that was really neat. hearing him wonder and speculate about Cassie while i knew where she was and what was (and would) happen to her, i felt like i was in on a secret. i found myself wanting to tell him she was okay.
the new characters are great... i LOVE guillermo. i want to run off with him; he's totally dreamy and such a doer. i hate kearny and am both looking forward to and dreading the clashes that our gang will have with him in the next book. he's such a sleaze ball. of course i love maria, and grace reminds me of a friend of mine, so positive and a real 'look for the beauty' type, which is both admirable and maddening.
i am looking forward to the next installment of 'the city' series! great job, ms. fleming!!!
I don't want to give away any of the plot. Most of the story takes place in New York City - about as far away from Alaska where I live, and way out of my comfort zone geographically. She explains the issues of survival and how they cope, but not in nauseating detail. The story focuses on the characters and how they cope with the various situations and the interactions among the group. I highly recommend this book. I just want the second one to already be out!
