From the Author
Based on my late mother's true story, NO MORE LONELY NIGHTS transports the reader from the glamour of Egypt's European expatriate community to the United States as it was in the era of the popular TV series Mad Men.
Heroine Dominique Avallon is modeled after my mother, while her mother -- the autocratic Solange -- is based on my grandmother.
My grandmother came to live with my parents in Savannah in the 1950s. Egypt had become too dangerous for the Europeans who had lived there for generations. In the book, I substitute New Orleans for Savannah because I actually know it better.
That said, the first part of the book is based on the many stories my mother and grandmother told me as I was growing up. As in the book, my late grandmother spoke almost no English, and I grew up speaking French with her.
I wish I could say that the opulent life portrayed in New Orleans was what I grew up with, but no. We were just a middle-class family struggling with expenses like most people.
I wish I could say that my mother's glamorous profession in the book was fact, but I'm afraid I dreamed that up based on the profession I pursued for about a decade.
After you read the book, feel free to contact me with any questions you have about what was true and what was fiction. You can reach me at nicolemcgeheefiction.com
