Format: Paperback
In these poems of European setting, many of which were inspired by the Spanish poet García Lorca, Cyrus Cassells displays an almost effortless excellence, a verbal flair and confidence that would give the most stony-hearted reader a measure of joy. We open the book at random to find lines like these:

Accept the sun's
regency and bribery,
Moorish gold.
Come to the window teeming
with ancient script, stone filigree,
for look, your room opens onto
a holy rampart.

This is not the forbidding perfection of the pedantic academician, but the beauty and grace of a gymnast in words--an inviting idiom revealing treasures and pleasures that few can anticipate!

Here is the beginning of "The Magician Lorca." We have no fear of exaggeration if we call this poem a splendor:

So I took from you
a certain gypsy elixir,
so that I might likewise witness
a parliament of crickets,
swift angels of olive oil, the supreme
sun of a tuba,
unregenerate gypsy drums and numberless
crystal tambourines lacerating
the placid and dragonfly-delicate dawn--

Not even the pentameters of the late James Merrill are this gorgeous. Read also the ending of "Catechism in the Garden of Five Pines," also dedicated to Lorca, if you want to know how wondrous poetry can be. Mr Cassells is a poet, and one whose work we recommend without hesitation.
