Dear Reader,

Many people have wondered why I’ve been speaking out on controversial issues for the last few years. They say I’ve never held political office. I’m not a constitutional scholar. I’m not even a lawyer. All I can say to that is “Guilty as charged.”

It’s true that I’ve never voted for a budget America could not afford. I’ve never raised anyone’s taxes. And I’ve never promised a lobbyist anything in exchange for a donation.

Luckily, none of that really matters. Our founding fathers didn’t want a permanent governing class of professional politicians. They wanted a republic, in Lincoln’s words, "of the people, by the people, and for the people." A country where any farmer, small-business owner, manual laborer, or doctor could speak up and make a difference.

I believe that making a difference starts with understanding our amazing founding document, the U.S. Constitution. And as someone who has performed brain surgery thousands of times, I can assure you that the Constitution isn’t brain surgery.

The founders wrote it for ordinary men and women, in clear, precise, simple language. They intentionally made it short enough to read in a single sitting and to carry in your pocket.

I wrote this book to encourage every citizen to read and think about the Constitution, and to help defend it from those who misinterpret and undermine it. In our age of political correctness it’s especially important to defend the Bill of Rights, which guarantees our freedom to speak, bear arms, practice our religion, and much more.

The Constitution isn’t history—it’s about your life in America today. And defending it is about what kind of country our children and grandchildren will inherit.

I hope you’ll enjoy learning about the fascinating ways that the founders established the greatest democracy in history—and the ways that recent presidents, congresses, and courts have threatened that democracy.

About the Author

BEN CARSON, MD, was raised by a poor single mother in Detroit. He retired as the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital after a groundbreaking medical career of more than thirty-five years. He is the author of eight previous books, including One Nation, One Vote, America the Beautiful, and Gifted Hands. A former member of the President’s Council on Bioethics, he is the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the country.

Dr. Carson and his wife and coauthor, CANDY CARSON, are the founders of the Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes the achievements of deserving young people. They have three grown children and two grandchildren, and now live in Florida.

My Third Carson book

The other two were much better. When Dr. Carson talks about our culture, I respect his opinion. When he talks about our history, basically it is accurate. When he talks about his past, it is wild and I understand. Never doubt any psycho story someone from Detroit tells you. Trust me, I'm from The Ruins. Now when he talks about the Constitution, or maybe just because this was written for his election effort. I am sensing a certain missing honesty. I really do feel like he tried to do the political thing in this book and write it in a way that would not ruffle any feathers. Oh, I know that libs will attack him and me no matter what. You "people" haven't read his previous works. He never pulled any punches, agree or disagree with him. He just seems out of his element in this book or maybe because it was rushed to get it to publication before the campaign? There are many solid parts of the book and other parts that seemed ad lib.

Would I suggest this book? I am not sure, the political season (and maybe the country) is nearly over. I would not suggest this as your first Dr. Caron book, but if you like most of his other books. You will probably enjoy this one.

I am sharing this book with other people to use to get educated, so that we all can make better decisions on who to vote for. Carson didn't write this just to get himself elected, but to help us to see if the people we vote for are following the U.S. Constitution in their beliefs and voting patterns, or are they trying to change it? Our children are not being taught these things in the public school systems any more. Haven't for years. We need to know these things and pass them on to future generations, so that we don't allow ourselves to make the same kinds of mistakes that the people in Europe made, which allowed Hitler to take control. This book helps to remind some of us, and educate those who never learned in the first place.

I have always tried to teach my children (now grown) about the real beauty and genius that is the US Constitution. Civics as I was taught in school has been taken apart and is not recognizable these days. Dr Carson has don a fabulous job of presenting the constitution article by article and explained in easily understood terms. I believe it should be mandatory reading for every high school student. This Christmas I purchase a copy for each of my now adult daughters and gave it to them with my request to promise they have their children read it when they are old enough. It is easily understood yet explains the desires and hopes of the writers of the document. Highly recommended to all.
