I've played with this book and its predecessor (Rapid Math Tips and Tricks) for years and they are favorites. I also recommend Benjamin and Shermer; and Jerry Lucas. Lucas's book started me on this kick. With practice- and you must practice- problems that would have taken me 5 minutes to do mentally now seem ridiculously easy and take 10 seconds or less.

I purchased this book to get some useful tricks for everyday life and also to use them for standartized tests.
Well, there are 2 or 3 useful, and the rest is rubbish.

For example, the author gives "different" tricks like:
Trick 1. Multiplying by 6: you multiply by 2 and then by 3
Trick 2. (another one!) Multiplying by 12: you multiply by 2, by 2 and then by 3.

Also, there are very "useful" tricks like "Squaring any number ending in 6" - I wonder who would use that often.

In conclusion, 2 stars for two tricks I liked, and also for funny curiosities with numbers at the beginning of every chapter.

Excellent Way to Motivate Students Struggling with Math

I use this with my kids all the time. They are all math lovers and they enjoy figuring out how the tricks "work". However, the biggest hit I've had in doing these in public is with people, adults and children, that somehow have qualified themselves as "non-math people". When I show them the tricks and immediately ask them to do them themselves they light up - they get all excited. This is a must have book for all math teachers and parents. This is a way to keep math fun and relevant. Relevant in the sense that most of the computations are things we need to do daily.
