The combination of history, adventure, and a sweet romance has been so refreshing and interesting.
Being able to read a story about men and women of character and faith is rare these days, much less a whole series that really doesn’t deteriorate from one book to the next.
The author keeps things moving along through all five books by having a focus on different times in history and weaves the history into an interesting and exciting story with touch points of a beautiful love story.
This is a book I can freely recommend for young ladies as well as older women. It will touch your heart no matter your age and remind you true love is real.
As I read the series, I got to know the characters and it was interesting to see how they changed and grew as time went on. I especially liked how the characters seemed very real, with their own quirks and flaws. It made the stories much more like real life than many I've read. No family is perfect, and some have more serious issues than others. I can certainly identify with some of the family problems in these stories. The author did a great job with making the characters of the past come alive for me, too.
The main historical action in this book is the construction of a community of Sears catalog "kit" houses in Carlinville, IL, in 1918. This might sound rather mundane when compared to more dramatic historical events, but I found the personal stories and details like that very interesting. The designs and business models for such homes seemed to be ahead of their time. What was even more unusual was for a lady to be supervising that sort of construction work during that era.
This book was just as entertaining as the others, and concluded story lines from previous books (no spoilers; you'll have to read it!) with a climactic happy ending. Towards the end there were even some hints of a possible new career for Merri, so I wonder if the story would continue... I certainly hope to hear more of Merri, how her faith grows, and maybe she will even be able to start a family and try to apply the lessons that she has learned.
