Melodie Alexander is on a plane headed for Dallas carrying the emotional wounds of losing her best friend and fiance, Tom, in Afghanistan. Daniel Bresland is on board that same plane dealing with his own demons from having served in that war torn country. A chance meeting and their immediate combustible chemistry leads them on a path to each other and to healing.
This is a well written romance that touches upon how combat affects all those who serve and those of whom John Milton once wisely observed, "They also serve who only stand and wait." The author handles the themes well and displays her understanding and compassion. As a reader, I found myself caring about these characters and I was sorry when the story was finished. I found myself wanting to spend more time with Melodie, Dan and his daughter, Annie.
Considering this is Nicole Leiren's debut book, I was amazed at how well it is written. It resonated with me because growing up, like Melodie, I was always in the shadow of my older sister, so I totally recognize and sympathized with how she felt. (Unlike Evelyn, my sister did everything to make me feel I was my own person, not a copy, to the point of always fighting for and with me against Mom's wishes.)
This is a beautiful story of two "broken" people who found each other and struggled to accept each other's weaknesses and by holding to each other through all the problems encountered on their journey to a HEA fairy tale ending, found the strength to accept love and everything that comes with it.
Possible spoiler....? ahead.. I am unsure if it is a true spoiler or not, but just in case......
I love Daniel's 8-yr-old daughter, Annie and I love how Evelyn's son, Jason immediately took to the Princess. I love the way Melodie and Evelyn finally learned to talk and listen, thus forging a strong bond as sisters. I also love how Melodie finally opened up to her Mother and remembered that Daniel had told her to be honest and say what she really thought. (Melodie's Dad reminded me so much of my own father, who allowed my mother to run our family with a strict and stern hand and I loved it when he would put his foot down by just saying my mother's name and she would shut up or stop scolding us... I guess this is why the story resonated so much with me, cuz I lived it and was lucky big sis shared everything with me, still does, to date.) Daniel may or may not be suffering from PTSD but since he had scheduled therapy sessions, am sure that with Melodie and Annie's support and love, he will be able to vanquish his nightmares!
The ending was perfect! Really true-to-life depiction that the reader cannot help but be drawn in. :-) But now, I want Evelyn's story and hope she will also get a HEA fairy tale ending!
Will strongly recommend this, actually, I already did, to family and friends. Will be keeping my eye out on future works.
