She travels out of town to support a friend Melissa who is dealing with her own loss, and stays for a week at Melissa and her husband's getaway, Ocean View Stables, where she is attracted to a man from her past, an old childhood friend, Ethan. Ethan is staying at Ocean View Stables for a week as well, with his 9 year old daughter Isy. Ethan is immediately attracted to Cassie, too.
Despite all of the changes Cassie has gone through in the 3 years since Mike's death, one of her biggest obstacles is trying to figure out if she's ready to move on and take another chance on love, while always wondering if Mike would be ok with her moving on.
Meanwhile Ethan has his own obstacles to get through -He has a dangerous job which requires weeks away from home and he is trying to help his daughter deal with his alcoholic ex-wife who spends time after time in rehab. What Isy wants more than anything is for her mom and dad and her to be a family again.
I enjoyed More Than A Promise and was hoping that all would work out for Cassie, and Ethan and Isy.
I had previously read Kristen James' Embers of Hopes, so going into this book, I knew about Cassie's history but I think this book would be fine to read without that known history as the author gave enough of the history, but I would recommend reading Embers of Hopes first.
I received a complimentary copy of More Than a Promise in exchange for a fair review.
The characters are well developed and down to earth with problems like normal people. The little girl Isy said, "That life wasn't fair." and that statement gave the story a depth as the characters faced the emotional fallout from things beyond their control. Cassie and Ethan were grade school friends and had a basis for developing a deep meaningful relationship. The fishing was great in the drift boat and the lavender beach wedding was perfect.
If you're a fan of romance with happy-ever-after endings in beautiful settings, then this is a story for you.
What I also really enjoyed that although this is a stand alone book, there are several in the series where the characters intertwined. I had already read 'A Cowboy for Christmas' where you meet Cassie's friends who run the ranch that she visits and 'Embers of Hope' where you get the whole story of how Savanna and Jason end up together so it made this story much more enjoyable getting to hear more about the future of those couples.
I have read several boosk from Kristen James and recommend every single one of them.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to review it.
Cassie and Ethan have had to both overcome real life issues to get to present day, which they both will continue to struggle with. Cassie and Ethan knew each other as children. Family and lives took them away from each other until Cassie takes a vacation to the coast and runs into Ethan, who is on a vacation with his daughter. Their current lives force them to connect again. But will Cassie be able to overcome her past, the sudden death 3 years prior of her husband Mike, and allow her to move forward to have a relationship with Ethan and to truly be able to live again?
Ethan has a nine year old daughter who he is struggling to care for while the child's mom is in rehab. Ethan's job also takes him away for a certain periods of time. Can Ethan come to terms that giving his daughter a good life without fear of his daughter losing both parents and have a new beginning with Cassie?
A storyline that brings real life issues to heart and wonder if second chances can really happen.
This is a beautifully written book. The descriptions of Oregon and the backdrop area in which the story is placed is amazing. You wish you were there too.
I have said it before Kristen James is the Master Crafter, she creates characters that are realistic in plots that are gripping and 'un-put-downable'
I really loved this story.
