The Morgan Library: An American Masterpiece Hardcover – July 10, 2006
From Library Journal
Over 100 items from the renowned Pierpont Morgan Library are at the reader's fingertips in this delightfully illustrated tribute to the historic landmark. The foreword by Pierce, director of the library, and an introductory chapter penned by Jean Strouse, author of a recent biography of J. Pierpont Morgan, place the reader squarely in situ with the robber baron and his family. We learn of the very unlibrarian-like qualities of the dynamic Belle da Costa Greene, first director of the Morgan Library; how Morgan avoided pricey tariffs on imported works of art; and many other interesting tidbits. The following chapters are arranged by type of art. Music scores by Bach, Mozart, and Schubert; letters penned by Lord Byron, Thoreau, and Poe; sketches by Gainsborough, Rubens, and Carracci; book bindings made of leather, goatskin, and precious metals all of these give a very personal, tangible glimpse into the history of the Western world. Only a small fraction of Morgan's hoard is on display at any given time owing to conservation issues, but this book provides a neat overview of the types of materials available and the depth of the collection. Recommended for most libraries. Nadine Dalton Speidel, Cuyahoga Cty. P.L., Parma, OH
